What is the world coming too. The beloved toast and bread topping of Aussies is banned.

Kraft spokeswoman Joanna Scott said: "The (US) Food and Drug Administration doesn't allow the import of Vegemite simply because the recipe does have the addition of folic acid.''

Not only is it banned. Border guards have searched cars. Check this out.

Former Geelong journalist Daniel Fogarty has been searched at the US-Canada border for a prohibited substance.

What is this prohibited substance --

Dan told the Sunday Herald Sun: “The border guard searched our car and asked us if we were carrying any Vegemite.”

Outrageous!

Will Australians be forced to launch sanctions against the U.S.?

It will be an agressive move but it may be the only way.

I put forward the suggestion that all U.S. based Anzac celebrities be forced to return to the land girt by sea.

*Nicole Kidman

*Russell Crowe

*Hugh Jackman

*Mel Gibson

*Keith Urban

*Naomi Watts

* The kid from Neighbours who is in House

Hmm... Looking over this list we could be doing the Americans a service by forcing them back to Australia.

Why don't we just go back to the original recipe and take the folate out?

It's not unheard of for manufacturers to alter products for export. I can't say that I understand the law, but if that's what it says, then what are you going to do?

I think it's unusual, but not outrageous.

Folic acid is important for the developing baby in utero...surely the percentage is not in illegal quantities ??

They are just afraid that Vegemite will become popular...KRAFT is an American owned company anyway...go figure

Oh well I guess all the Aussies in the Land of Uncle Sam we will just have to eat all that other adulterated crap they fob off as food !!!

Are you Australian? Have you ever eaten Vegemite? Vegemite is the 'apple pie' of Australia. It is a cultural icon.

Well, personally this does'nt effect me, as I plain just dislike
the stuff, it tastes horrid to me.

As for outlawing it, well it's a minor technicality, and I'll bet some
xenophobe in power decided to point it out and enforce it.

If a person wahts to eat Vegemite, why should the government tell
them they whether they can or not.

Apparently in the U.S. folate is only acceptable in breads and cereals.

This remindes me of the time Tim-Tams were banned in the States because they had too much sugar!

It is reassuring to see that people are getting searched at the border for Vegemite. If he'd had coc aine, he would have been waved through.

I think it is really ironic that the land that started the 'fast food evolution' that has lead to a world wide obesity epidemic suddenly has a conscience and pretends to be worried about the health of it's citizens...laughable

Perhaps someone who is still seething over the '83 America's Cup?

"Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich
And he said,

"I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

All the Aussies will have to join the pensioners and pot heads and head to Mexico for the contraband, cheap pharmacuticals and drugs. Day Trips to Tijuana.

iori_komei, the secret to eating it is to spread it real thin. You always see these asian tour groups that glob it on like jam or whatever, and then they go "This tastes disgusting!"

I reckon it tastes great.

What's interesting is that folic acid seems to be extremely good for you in a number of ways (especially for women) and only has a potential minor negative effect if you get too much of it. Maybe keeping all us U.S. people from folic acid is a form of population control. (Only slightly laughing at this point.) I mean folic acid helps generate new cells, appears to help fight off cancer, and prevents birth defects and "pregnancy anemia".

Yeah, damned that stuff! o_O

For the last few minutes, I couldn't stop laughing, full belly laughs.

Searching cars for Vegemite? Come on!

What is your country coming to?

Yes, this makes no sense. The biggest problem with a lack of it prior to conception and during pregnancy is spina bifida. I believe Australia has one of the lowest rates of this terrible birth defect (since adding the folic acid to vegemite). Seems much more effective than the enrichment we have put into grain products for the very same reasons.

Meanwhile, being that it is a water soluble vitamin (folic acid) doesn't that make it even less of a threat? Don't excess water soluable vitamins tend to be excreted.

This is just bizarre.
