Scientists found a gold mine of bacteria almost two miles beneath
the Earth’s surface.

The subterranean microorganisms, a division of Firmicutes bacteria,
use radioactive uranium to convert water molecules into useable
energy.
Uranium is an element contained within the Earth’s crust and is an
abundant source of energy.

The presence of such terrestrial organism raises the potential that
bacteria could live beneath the surface of other planets such as
Mars.

The water contained hydrogen and hydrocarbons that form when
water exposed to radiation from rocks containing uranium breaks
down.
The age of the water and analysis of the microbes revealed that
these bacteria parted from their surface relatives some three to
25 million years ago.

Scientists still don’t know how surface Firmicutes managed to make
a home for themselves so deep in the Earth.
However, they function similar to photosynthetic organisms that
capture sunlight and turn it to energy for other organisms.
This means that Firmicutes could support other microbial communities
with the energy acquired from uranium.

Very cool, if life can survive in such an unusual environment,
makes the prospect of life elsewhere in our own solar system
much more viable.

The great thing about a 'find' such as this is the fact that if we can have bacteria growing so
deep in our own world, why can't the same happen on other worlds? Bacteria easily may be
some of the simplest of all lifeforms, but it's still life.

I find this to be a wonderful discovery, and I appreciate you posting this information for us to ponder the possibilities

This screams to me:

VIOLATION OF TIME/SPACE CONTINUUM!

Men should not be digging holes this deep. This goes into the same category as the river of toxic mud in Java or blowing up asteroids to see what happens... or HAARP. "Active" earth research such as this presents potential calamity to future generations.

Imagine these bacteria thriving at the surface after a nuclear winter.

Tower of babel,

Err, Ok, why?

Men should not be digging holes this deep.

There's no reason not to, it helps increase our scietific knowlege
base, and we may find something that can make the world better,
like a bacteria that turns radioactive material into non-radioactive
material.

I saw that said such deep-living organisms may have repopulated the surface after it was sterilized during some intense impacts during first couple billion years of life Earth.

Example 1)
Man digs a well and taps into the deep aquifer 500 feet below. The water is really clean.

Man dies and well remains.

Next generation spills some toxin near the well site when cleaning up some dumped garbage on their land. instead of toxin filtering through the soil... it instantly taints the deep aquifer (time/space infraction). 3 miles away a spring that once flowed God pure... now flows tainted.

Example 2)
Wonderful carbon energy sources are found that had been seperated from man by God, over eons of time. Man finds he can get rich selling this crude to his brother. Brethren across the globe consumes these carbon sources like crack rock. Net carbon in the upper atmosphere (time/space infraction) changes. Weird weather happens. People across the globe begin speaking of the "end times". Hi! How are you? What brings you to ATS?

Example 3)
Java toxic mud flow... Toxic mud deep in the earth slowling burning off its filth. Seperated from man by Cosmic Law. Greedy man digs exploratory wells without casings... A panama canal is created from pressurized internal mud to the surface (violation of time/space) Village cover in river of hot benzene mud.

Moral of the story...

Stop digging deep holes. And if the hole is already there... anythng that you find there... leave there.

Remember the Boy Scout, "Leave no Trace Priniples":

NUMBER 4

Leave What You Find

Allow others a sense of discovery, and preserve the past. Leave rocks, plants, animals, archaeological artifacts, and other objects as you find them. Examine but do not touch cultural or historical structures and artifacts. It may be illegal to remove artifacts.
Minimize Site Alterations

Do not dig tent trenches or build lean-tos, tables, or chairs. Never hammer nails into trees, hack at trees with hatchets or saws, or damage bark and roots by tying horses to trees for extended periods. Replace surface rocks or twigs that you cleared from the campsite. On high-impact sites, clean the area and dismantle inappropriate user-built facilities such as multiple fire rings and log seats or tables.

Good campsites are found, not made. Avoid altering a site, digging trenches, or building structures.

Never fool yourself... we are ALWAYS camping,
