They can not because they get shot when they get to close to the border, is like shot first ask questions later.

But I was asking my husband, what will happen if hundred of thousand of NK people starts to move to the border with SK, will they shot all of them without creating an international insident?

Well let see what happen next.

Yeah I agree it was just on the news the other night how a few North Koreans were fishing and crossed over into South Korea and SK fired like 40 or 60 shots into the air to tell them to leave. Now what if what they were really doing was testing the waters to see if they can become friends with them and come into their country. What a sad situation it is over there with the familys being seperated.

Ugh, not a good situation at all. I usually don't care about what is happening on the Asian continent but I really wonder where this will all lead. Or will it lead to nowhere and ATS is overeacting as it does with every conflict?

This is precisely why South Korea does not want to be re-unified with the North. The economy is strong and the influx of refugees across the border will have a devastating effect. It's really only the older generation that still has family connections, the younger generation see them as the "crazy cousins".

China is building a fence beside North Korea

Whoa!

Is lil' Kim considering going to the UN over this like the president of Mexico is looking to do over the US building a fence on US soil?

I doubt he will go to the UN. I don't think he cares what anyone thinks of him. He seems to have a death wish for his people though. China knows something is going down. Remember, they even got the 20 minute warning about what he was about to do. So I think they know alot more as well. Which is probably why they are putting the fence up. Wonder if it will do any good?

A flood of refugees (given a N. Korean conflict) has been a concern of China’s for some time. If China wants to build a border fence/wall across its’ border with N. Korea…that is their prerogative.

Not with-out question.

The party recipient to a refugee influx has a right to control migration and apply its’ own laws directly to the refugee population. Additionally, states have the right to deny certain persons refugee status under the bilateral UN agreements...this requires screening and often the encamping refugees etc...there is no 'free run' accross the border.

That said, China has its’ history in their dealings with and alleged improper classification of refugees and as a consequence, China has had plenty of historical and current problems with UNCHR.

China has always taken sides with NK for political reasons - they dont give a monkeys for the people. But now that China is embracing the free market etc they will soon stop siding with them and probably stop all aid/ fuel etc.

Just like I said, China cares more now about the money and it isn't purely about the ideology anymore.

NK is a failed attempt at socialism and even China by embracing western capitalism is also saying under its breath that socialism failed there too.

But China got bailed out by all the western factories and distributors but NK is still bleeding. They the Chinese do not want to pay for the disaster that NK has become so everyone is hoping that Lil' Kim will fall and allow SK to walk in like what happened between the two Germanys and take the problem on.

First, the Geneva convention does not apply to those who starve their own people yet detonate nukes. Alot of rice could have been produced instead of funding a WMD.

I think they should build a fence, and then we should leave SK and Japan. We need to sit this one out. Let China move in and take it all, we have our own problems. It might even make products cheaper than they are.

The only thing that the US should worry about is an actual attack against the US mainland, and how we would handle that. We need to finish building our own walls...

I firmly believe that China will do nothing this time if a war starts on the Korean peninsula. The Chinese Capitalist(what it really is) Party does want to spend a nickel more than they have to and they inherited the PDRK from Mao and have tried to figure out what to do with them. Historically the Chinese and Korean's haven't been the best of friends. I think the nuke test is the straw that broke the camel's back. One way or another I believe the current regime in North Korea days are numbered. I believe the Chinese will act before we wll.

I don't see why they wouldn't, especially since there are a lot of people with relations on both sides of the border when the place got split off.

well, let's just put it this way: for people to walk across the 38th parrallel line on foot and survive is harder than invading the US.

Does anyone see the irony of this? After decades of aiding an abeting they now build a fence as nk is about 2 self destruct? As if 2 say"no mas"I agree with previous posters who think the u.s.should stay out and let the chinese reap what they themselves have sown 4 creating this frankenstein of a problem...

The irony I see here is that the UN is against any type fences being built....and yet, as we all also know, the UN enjoys sitting on "fences." Hence, nothing being done in the Sudan, nothing being done till it was too late in Rwanda, and of course, there is Kosovo, etc., etc., etc.

That, to me, is the real irony of "fences."

There are some patterns developing. Chinese military movements are highly secret, which is why it is odd there are so many leaks coming from China.

Example:

China cancels border troops' leave after nuclear test
Beijing - Troops stationed along China's border with North Korea have had their leave cancelled and some units are conducting anti-chemical drills following North Korea's nuclear test, a Hong Kong newspaper said on Tuesday.

...

'China is definitely worried about [radioactive] leakage crossing the border,' Shi Yihong of People's University told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

'If the monitoring departments proved that there was leakage crossing the border, that would add to the rage from China,' Shi said.

The border fence also fits in with what many see as the face saving measure China is getting ready to support, namely an air, land, and sea embargo. As I understand it, China would deploy the PLAN with JMSDF and USN warships in an 'embargo' of North Korea to prohibit nuclear proliferation.

South Korea doesn't like this at all, it would be the sole source of land trade with North Korea. The Russian position on this is still unknown.

This is an interesting analysis of why this might be happening. What is also interesting is how the Chinese media is reporting the situation.

North Korea warns of war
North Korea stoked tensions in Asia Wednesday, saying it would regard sanctions against it over its nuclear test as an act of war and threatening more tests.

South Korea said it was making sure its troops were prepared for atomic warfare and to face its communist neighbour's one-million-member military - the fifth largest in the world.

That is a huge freaking statement from a Chinese media source, not exactly the kind of statement China would put out there unless they were preparing their people for something. Their press is a bit too calculated to casually throw this on the front page of the 'world' section.

Something is coming, something with teeth, and it is starting to look like China and the US are working off the same page. I'm starting to wonder which country to watch, China or South Korea, because while China is looking to save face, South Korea is looking to avoid war at all costs. Those two things may not go hand in hand.

China had troops on the sk/nk border?

This is all interesting, and worrisome, news. If NK does decide to test the waters again, or attack someone, I wonder how long it will take?

The world can only hope 4 a popular uprising again the regime.Tho their chances of success seem slim we can only hope.If they succeed then i think the world would provide much aid to its neglected people.

I don't think there will be an uprising. Although I don't know that for sure. I mean you would think when they got cut off from their families would of been the uprising.
Not stopped till they got their families back.

well..

Communist tend not to read that part

And Americans tend not to read the part that bans torture.

Anyway, why shouldn't China build a fence?

They have been consistently trying to prevent the situation from going off, and it seems to be falling on deaf ears in NK.
The U.S. is no better, trying to further starve the people of NK because of their insane leader.

Don't you see? This is the last option for China - to build a fence. The Americans won't stop starving the North Koreans, the North Koreans won't listen to the Chinese.

Anyone know if China have a plan if the North Korea regime falls and there is a mass influx of refugees?
