new ideas, some physicists complain, are a dime a dozen. What they crave is new data, perhaps from the Large Hadron Collider scheduled to go online near Geneva next year.

Fourteen years ago the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) made an astrophysics breakthru by detecting a signature in the background radiation left over from the Big Bang. It was what scientists had been hoping to find to help support their Big Bang Theory.

Will the new atom smasher in Geneva generate the kind of data scientists crave? Will it be large enough to enable particle/theoretical physicists to make big strides??
