Britons travelling abroad are likely to be flying in plastic planes in the future, says the chief of Boeing.

while this may potentially save weight what will the lifespan of these aircraft be? and will they be able to stand up to the constant stresses of take offs and landings day in and day out?

Planes are beginning to be made of composites. These are stronger, lighter, and more fatigue resistant than metal. Nothing to worry about

It was a joke on the article.

I'm pretty sure everyone will be flying in aircraft built using composite materials

I'm sure there was a headline exactly the same as this in Flight about 27 years ago?

Composites have been in use in major structures at least that long and the Learfan was the first all plastic aeroplane way back in 1981.

lol the real news in aviation about structual design is being able to have the wings/fuselage/etc 'mutate' in flight to different conditions.
