anyone got any idea what this is supposed to be? and how effective it will likely be? gotta admit i can't see them having much laser knowledge personnally?

They would've obtained most of their initial technological expertise and help off France, Germany and Russia....who have been supplying them via the black market and other ways for years. Now China is also helping them out. They mosy certainly wouldn't have the capabilities otherwise.

I hope the idiots are stupid enough to wait 5 or 6 years before they start a war. Although I don't think they will. However, what would they do with F35's armed with 1MW solid state laser cannons coming at them??. So much for their much vaunted Russian S400 missile systems. After frying any missile shot at them, the F35's would then turn their launchers into molten slag heaps.....all whilst 100kms away. Even the 100KW laser systems they'll be fitting to the planes by 2008-2009 will fry their targets from a minimum range of 10kms. Let alone the possibility of them also being armed with HPM (High Powered Microwave) weapons.

So this isn't a laser defense system, like Boeing's Airbourne Laser or the US-Israeli THEL/MTHEL system. They're just trying to jam a laser guided bomb with a laser, much the same way as you would jam a radar guided bomb with radar.

As for this being within their capabilities, the fact that the US (and allied countries) are partial to using laser-guided weapons has been well-known since the first Gulf War. It is equally well known that Iran has access to relatively advanced technology from Russia and China. It is possible that, in the ~15 years since Gulf War I, Iran has managed to construct some sort of laser jamming system.

I wouldn't want to bet on the effectiveness of such a system, however.

Another week, another hyperbolic claim from the Mullah regime.

Usually it involves pictures of dated foriegn equipment "pimped" with some minor modification or a cutting edge technological breakthrough that isn't.

They want to strike fear into the hearts of thier enemies, instead, they are providing comedy.

Bull, US LGB's are guided by an infrared laser beams and if need be the seeker can be programmed to follow a certain frequency. All Iran will be doing is putting on a disco show. Next.

As I see it, the US could use the Iranian laser system against them-which I would find no end to the laughter.

It would work like this, the US has planes designed to target missile/radar sites.

It flies, gets detected and uses the enemies own radar beam to send a missile down and destroy it (Wild Weasels)

Just imagine the same idea, but the missiles fly Iran's laser beam to its source

The only problem i have with this is America has sold a lot of it's weopons to Isreal whom i believe has been caught passing them onto China who deals with Iran, so between China and Iran will they have found a way to counter US tech?

There are so many assumptions in your post that it's impossible to answer, so I will just say this, other "normal" lasers cannot disrupt LGB's. Especially if all you're going to do is shine lasers into the night, LGB's will not lock on to those beams.

I imagine that the Iranian LGB jammers are every bit as effective as the Iraqi GPS jammers that were purchased from the Russians (and the Chinese also I believe) and used at the start of OIF. IIRC, several were taken out by GPS guided munitions simply to prove a point.

I always have a giggle when I read these threads. Mainly, I might add, at the "my penis is bigger than yours" Americans..

Just because it isn't American, doesn't automatically make it useless. In fact, for many manufactured goods in the world, the last thing you do is buy American. You can get better and cheaper off any number of other suppliers. About the only thing the Yanks are good at is inventing things to blow up other things. (before you all get your wangs out again, this is a tongue in cheek remark)

Instead of you all basing your assumptions on little (or no) data for this system, why don;t you research it and then make some claims? If you cannot get any info on it, then I think it is completely rediculous that you can make so many claims about how the US will "kick butt....Yeeeeeehaw!".

It's as bad as some of the claims the Iranians are making. At the end of the day, the only way you'll find out if it works as intended is when it is used. Until then, you're all guessing. I am willing to bet that none of you has intricate knowledge on how your own weapon systems operate, let alone how these new Iranian gadgets do.

Hence, the proxy war in Lebanon. Nice little proving ground there for some Iranian weapons. Did rather well too against the much-vaunted IDF tanks and even a ship. So, I think, they should be given the benefit of the doubt and treated with some caution.

Remember, do not underestimate your enemy, otherwise when you all have your penises out, measuring them, he'll come up behind you and chop it off.
