Able danger was a data mining operation, which supposedly had identified the 9-11 terrorists prior to 9-11. The new report attempts to debunk claims that 9-11 terrorists were identified by the operation.

The Pentagon inspector general's office said Thursday that a review of records from the unit, known as Able Danger, found no evidence it had identified ringleader Mohamed Atta or any other terrorist who participated in the 2001 attacks....

Weldon questioned the "motives and the content" of the report and rejected its conclusions. "Acting in a sickening bureaucratic manner, the DOD IG cherry-picked testimony from witnesses in an effort to minimize the historical importance of the Able Danger effort," Weldon said in a statement.

It appears from past stories, that the government has pushed pretty strongly to cover up the revelations from operation Able Danger. From what I can tell, the operation invovled data mining from all sorts of difference sources.

From the look of it, they would've have had access to many databases. Although, this sounds like this operation was somewhat experimental in nature, which may have placed it outside normal intelligence channels. I think that may have allowed them to be in an unusual position to access lots of intelligence from lots of sources.

It seems possible the government wants to cover up the operation to 'protect', whatever intelligence source the information came from. There is as always the risk that acting on intelligence will dry up its sources. There is also the allegation that the intelligence wasn't shared with the FBI. This could indicate, that they considered the information very sensitive for one reason or another.

Of course, many other explanations are possible. It might be that the senior leaders didn't fully trust the newer intelligence group, or there was malicious intent.
