A nun working at a children's hospital in Somalia was apparently murdered in revenge for the Pope's speech. Several churches in Palestine have been burnt to the ground. The Tehran Times remarks that Benedict XVI's comments were "codewords for the start of a new Crusade".

AN ITALIAN nun was killed by gunmen at a children’s hospital in Somalia yesterday in an apparent revenge attack for the Pope’s speech about Islam last week.

Sister Leonella Sgorbati, 65, left, was shot four times in the back by two men at the entrance to the hospital in the capital, Mogadishu. Her bodyguard was also killed. The Vatican said that it hoped that the “horrible tragedy” was an isolated incident.

The killing came after Benedict XVI expressed deep regret yesterday at the furious reaction to his remarks on Islam and holy war, saying that the text he quoted last week did not reflect his personal opinion.

As a lapsed Catholic, I take most things the Vatican says with a generous pinch of salt (even if it is bad for my blood pressure), but I am sure that Benedict must be privately saying that his point is proven by the reaction to his speech.

His predecessor seemed to be keener on a rapprochement with islam than does the present incumbent - who apparently believes that reciprocal freedoms should be granted to Christians living in muslim countries that are enjoyed by muslims living in the West.

Do the violent reactions to Danish cartoons and Papal speeches prove that Islam and a concept of free speech are mutually incompatible? Do politicians and religious leaders have a responsibility to avoid the issue, or conversely is freedom of thought and speech more important than offence caused to religious groups, even if it is at the expense of community relations?

Pope Benedict's quote is releavent today. Just as Muslims tried to convert others by force(Jihad) over 700 years ago so do they now. Muslims feel that they should be able to say anything about Western Society and Western Religion without consequences however when a Western Religious/Political Leaders say the word Jihad or Mohammad, Muslims start killing people.

How can there be a peaceful solution to the Middle East when Muslim Religious/Political leaders continue to teach that the West is the Devil.

The only thing Jihad will cause in the Western World is Solidarity amongst the West against Islam.

The more Jihad(violent Religious Conversions) and terrorist attacks that the West sees the stronger our resolve against this enemy will become.

q. Why hasn't there been another 9/11 in the last 5 years?

a. Another 9/11 would strengthen the West's resolove to such an extent that the West's response to another attack would not be as measured as the attacks the West have carried out since 9/11 such as the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Clearly, not all muslims are cowards. The scum that did this were, just like the scum that did 911, etc. But not all muslims. Lets not blast innocent people to avenge the death of an innocent person.

The nun forgave her attackers, who the hell are the rest of us to condem all muslims?

Well hang on a minute alot of those muslims were out in the streets protesting chanting death to the POPE, death to the cross, can you blame anyone for putting them all in the same basket? So yes we have every damm right to stand up and condemm all muslims.

The pope proved his point with these attacks at the churches and the death of this 70 year old NUN. She was helping and aiding Muslim children, what threat did she pose to those who killed her? No threat what so ever. Least she shows some desency in forgiving those who attacked her. Unlike those who want every catholic christian killed now. If Muslims do not agree with these lunatics are doing then they should stand up and say so. But they have not done so.

No. The reason they didn't go after the Pope was because they knew what'd happen if they succeeded in killing him. Remember the Crusades? The Catholics boast the largest contingent of followers on the planet. Should the leader of their religion get mercilessly murdered for something as small as something he said, then all kinds of terrible things would happen. That's why they didn't go after the Pope.

Every right? Sure, but you're still in the wrong.

The pope proved his point with these attacks

See, the thing is, everyone says that, and then they say 'the pope was misunderstood'. Even the pope is saying he was misunderstood. SO which is it?
And the major point of the pope's speech was the role of reason in faith. There is nothing reasonable in condeming a faith and all its members because there are a lot of violent yahoos within it. If we're going to do that, then we have to condemn the christian faith, because it is the most violent and deadly faith in history, nothing 'magical' changed in the christian faith between now and the crusades, hell, the very same positions exist, like the papacy. SO if all of islam, today, is to be condemed for muslim fanatics, then christianity, despite being unusually civilized for its history today, still has to be condemed for being a thuggish, irrational, genocidal cult.

Either things are taken on a case by case basis, or lumped. Can't give the christians the benefit of the doubt, but not the muslims.

She was helping and aiding Muslim children,

And yet, so many are saying 'kill those little bastard terrorists, to avenge the nun'.

what threat did she pose to those who killed her?

What threat to conservative muslims pose to you? None. The actual threat of dying at the hands of a muslim are pretty damned small. You cannot claim that you are personally threatened by them, and that therefore they are violent goons that must be dealt with. You can't condem the nun-killers, but advocate their logic.

If Muslims do not agree with these lunatics are doing then they should stand up and say so. But they have not done so.

Utterly false. It seems no matter how many muslims dennounce these vile acts, they are ignored. Convenient.

SO the muslims are savages if some of them kill the pope, but the catholics are godly christians for murdering people that didn't lay a hand on him??? Irrational. Irrationality in faith, the very thing that the flame-stoking speech of the pope's was urging against.
They speak out and demonstrate against our religious leader, how dare they, lets kill them.
As much as muslims are ironically proving the pope's point, so are christians.
