At least one explosion accompanied by gunfire close to the United States Embassy in Damascus was reported by eyewitnesses on Tuesday morning.
A large plume of smoke emanating from the embassy area was seen across the Syrian capital.
The news comes the day after the fifth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the U.S. Top Al-Qa'ida figures warned there would be further
attacks against U.S. interests in the near future.

With the threats from Al Qeada still fresh in our minds and on the anniversary of 9/11 this would serve to remind us who we are dealing with. What is
known right now is that security forces have sealed off the Rawda area, which houses other embassies, security installations and senior officials'
residences.
UPDATE:
Four gunmen were killed in a shootout with guards when they tried to storm the embassy in Damascus, according to reports.
More information is sure to be forthcoming in this provocative event.
