Russian Airbase on Google Earth

I've been browsing around on Google Earth and I found a pretty big Russian Airbase with what looks like 30+ MiG 25s, a ton of attack helicopters, propably Mi-24s or Mi-28s and some Mi-26 Halos (8 rotor blade helos) and a lot of troop transports.

This is the biggest airbase i've seen in Russia so far and I just thought i'd post it's location in case it is of any intrest to people.

Location: 53° 9'53.87"N 158°27'11.32"E

Another interesting this is that they seem to be digging up some hangars or SAM sites in the North-East corner of the base.

P.S Theres a few planes that I havn't got a clue about. The ones with thier engines really close to the fuselage. Anybody know what they are?

Yeah thats kool, but have you seen the craters in the NEvada Desert or seen area 51

its just north west of Las Vegas
if you cant find it its on a dried up lake bed.

The MiGs are actually the MiG-25's successor: the MiG-31 Foxhound.

Re the other aircraft:

6+ Be-12 "Mail" flying boats used for maritime patrol. Example at 53 10 06.23 N, 158 26 09.40 E
...actually, there are too many types to list all. but they include:

Il-38 "May" maritime recce aircraft - low set straight wings with four engines

An-74 "Coaler" tactical transports - I think these are the ones "with engines close together"

An-12 "Cub" transport much like C-130 Hercules

Ka-32 "Helix" helicopters

Mi-26 "Halo" heavy lift helicopters (you were spot on there)

Yak-40 small jet liners (probably in civilian use)


There's another helicopter base about 1km east just the other side of the river plus a related helicopter dispersal about 500m south of that. And a nearby active S-300 (SA-10 "Grumble") SAM battery at 53 07 17.49 N, 158 23 40.36 E.

Well, they are both good. Generally the Su-30 is more agile, versitile and more recent but the MiG-31 has excellent range, radar and datalinks - very advanced wrhen it first entered service. It's suffered from lack of development whereas the Su-27 family had greater growth potential, hence the Su-30, 34, 35 etc etc.

There are some experimental/developmental varients of the MiG-31 which are far more advanced but with Russian defence spenfing in the 1990s, they never saw service.

A few anotated screen shots of the highlights around the base.

Most definitely the defend the Kamachatka Peninsula against intruding a/c.
The F-22A base at Elemdorf is what..only few thousand km away?
That accounts for the Sa-10 Grumle as well
Another question:
Was the Su-7/15 that shot down the KAL boeing jet scrambled from this base itself?
Kind of seems to fit into the flight path of that boeing which flew over Kamchatka and was shot down over Sakhalin.

In answer to bgaty: I was just browsing about. The trick is to scroll around at about 10 miles altitude and look out for stips of tarmac that are +1 km long...they stand out like a sore arse and they usually lead to some interesting finds

if you go west of that sam site you will find a nuke silo....v cool

snoopyuk, I don't see any Nuke Silos, just some unremarkable clusters of buildings, can you get co-ords I'm interested to see them

No that didnt work. You'll have to copy and past the actually co-ords.

Hover over the Silo, go to the "drawing pin" symbol, Add Placemark, go to Advanced and copy the two parts of the co-ords shown in the boxes with the top one first.

Almost the total of Tu 160 's in possession of Russia are based here.
