Jet Engine Starter Cartridges

Does anyone know about the Starter Cartridge device used on Fighter Planes?

I know the Hawker Hunter and F-105 Thud used them, Which other Fighters/Attackers use them? Are they still in use?

Negative - most if not all engines are started with a starter motor that is either powered by the aircrafts battery/main power supply or via bleed air from an auxillary power unit located on the aircraft. Cartridges haven't been used in new build aircraft for years.

The stopped using cartridges around the days of the B-52Ds. It's a bleed air Jet Fuel Starter now (JFS). Cartridges are too hard on the engines and was too rough of a start. Not to mention the huge black smoke cloud that made people think they were on fire. With the JFS you can pump it up by hand (though I feel really sorry for you if you have to) but with the cartridges you had to have specialists come in to remove them if they didn't fire.

The Canberra still uses them (not a fighter I know) but it has to still be the quickest way to get a motor turn'in and burn'in.......and it is what a linieys beret was for , to put out the fire after a cartridge start.

You could allways tell an experienced liney by the charred hat he used to wear when not on the line. How times have changed!

Maybe some of the Russian or Chinese stuff might stillhave a cartridge start backup system in case you are out in the field with no ground start or externa lpower available

What about turbine helicopters? I've seen videos of Cobras being started by the start cart which was 2 old buick V8s Is there a cartridge system for helis so they can land and shut it down and still be able to get out of there?

If I recall correctly, the Australian F-111 still uses starter cartridges (MXU-4/A). Just goes to show how old those airframes are getting now!
