Here's an article from the NY Post from Feb, 2002. It states that air quality at these schools was deemed to be hazardous.

What about all the poor beople in Brooklyn breathing in that huge original dust cloud, and all the residuals that were in the air for months afterwards. . . I think there will be many more people die from the aftermath vs the collapse. Probably was dubed too hard a task to tell the truth & evacuate, or at least tell the truth and give people the option to evacuate. So typical. . .
