In a show of worsening relations between the U.S. and Russia a joint military operation between the U.S. and Russia has been called off due to an outcry from communist party officials over the United States encroaching on a strategically important Russian region.
MOSCOW Russia said Tuesday it was pulling out of joint military exercises with the United States scheduled for later this month, because of unspecified problems with U.S. personnel. A Defense Ministry statement announcing the decision to cancel the Torgau-2006 exercises suggested it was connected to a dispute between NATO and countries participating in the NATO "Partnership for Peace" program.

The U.S. Embassy in Moscow had no comment.

In its statement, the Defense Ministry said the cancellation was related to "unresolved questions connected with the status of foreign military personnel arriving on the territory of the Russian Federation."

The ministry said the exercises could be held at later date once an agreement is reached between NATO member countries and participants in "Partnership for Peace." The statement said only that the agreement concerned "the status of forces."

Partnership for Peace is a watered-down NATO program of cooperation between the alliance and former Soviet militaries.

Russia has watched with growing concern as NATO has expanded to include former Soviet bloc nations such as the three Baltic states, Poland, Hungary and other countries. Moscow relations with Washington have also cooled noticeably in recent months

The Russians seem to have no problem having joint military maneuvers with China but when it comes to the U.S. a communist party outcry is the result. the lines are being drawn for a coming confrontation with Russia.

Im sorry I must be hard of reading, where in the article does it mention anything about communism? It says nothing about communist party officials, or that being the reason for russia canceling the exercise. What it says is a dispute about the soldier that will be on russian land. So please explain to me why the title and such is justified.

this is coming from the moscow times so I'm thinking that it is accurate.......

The delay of the Torgau military exercises came amid protests from Communist Party officials, who accused the United States of encroaching on a strategically important Russian region.

once a communist always a communist huh...

link same source slightly different story eh?

I see the same staff writer wrote both sources, but two days apart. your initial link from the MT only has like two sentences, and the article not mentioning communism at all is a full in-depth analysis of the situation? It cites growing tensions between the two, the surge in anti-american sentiment (as a result of our foreign policy no doubt) but nothing about communists. Do you think the author felt the need to change his story slightly, or perhaps was worked on by the editor? Either way, typically the same page is edited not pushed to the back and made way for the more in-depth one.

Meh, perhaps the Ruskies were ... dare I say.... scared of being shown up?

you should have used that one as your main source then. Your main source has nothing about communists. The bottom links are just supporting stories. You should have used the moscow times considering how much of our article had to do with them being communist. Maybe next time it wont be so confusing if you do that.

o maybe its because that article only has 2 lines to it. As dypes showed, same author, but now a different story with no mention of communists.

Im not defending communists or russia, but lets try to deny ignorance. Obviously its not a very reliable source if the same author puts two different stories up on the same site. I also think it was a poor reach on your part because that was the only real link that had something to do with communist ties.

Isn’t also true that Russia is canceling the very small joint exercise because concerns surrounding elements and the previous encroachments of NATO/ relations with parties to the “Partnership for Peace” program and not simply just the US?

Also, what may very well be the case and is more probably true is…

"The emotions being raised over these maneuvers by certain political forces do not match the scope of the planned exercises."
From Original Quoted Source

This is exercise is far easier to dispense than deal with any internal pressures given the extremely minor scope of the exercise itself.
