Shocking tale of a former Reuters news reporter who was taken at gun point in broad daylight by a gang supposedly in league with local police. The men casually escorted them to a nearby restaurant where they demanded their ATM cards and Pin numbers, telling the hostages that they had silenced weapons and that they would kill and torture them if they did not comply. All of this was done in a few short hours and the men were released after their bank accounts had been emptied.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - "I'm really sorry. This is my job," the man said, wiping his fingerprints from my debit card.

He slipped it back to me under a table in a crowded downtown restaurant where a Mexican friend and I had been held hostage for a half an hour that felt like two days.

An accomplice, who had guarded us while his partner emptied nearly $1,000 from a nearby cash dispenser using the PIN number I had given him, eyed the door.

I do not normally post things like this... but I was browsing Reuters and this popped up. I lived in Nogales Arizona for five years and I never ever experienced anything quite like this. The people were genuinely nice and excepting, being Caucasian and all, and for being a border town it had a really low crime rate. While there were other detractors I never ever experienced anything like this man is claiming to have experienced.

I am not 100% sure this isn't some kind of move to make Mexico look bad, more fear mongering, or what. But either way this is a really disturbing tale, and is really interesting that it is on Reuters, this seems more like some kind of local news paper story, not a major international news organization. What do you all think?

Actually it does happen, and he was lucky. Mexico is by all rights, a land without laws, or a land where the gun is the law. The polite well-mannered people most gringo's meet in the tourist sections are only like that while they are working. The word on the streets is "if you wander off the tourist path, you will suffer the consequenses. The funniest part of all the crime in Mexico is that it is a Catholic Country! A Catholic country that has forgotten the ten commandments rather completely as they can all justify ripping off anyone.

Stop travelling to Mexico, stop buying Mexican goods, send a message to the Mexican people, clean up your act, or your show will be closed.
