The amount of nicotine in most cigarettes rose an average of almost 10 percent from 1998 to 2004, with brands most popular with young people and minorities registering the biggest increases and highest nicotine content, according to a new study.

With increasing numbers of people managing to quit smoking could this be a sign that the big tabaco companies are getting worried and are trying to create a captive market?

Yeah, I heard that. This is for American sigarettes though. All sigarettes sold in the EU have less than 1mg of nicotine, even American Marlboros as they are made in Germany. There will not be sold any sigarettes legally within the EU with more than 1mg of nicotine. And don't get fooled by the word "light" in some brands. There's nothing "light" about them. It's just a trick to make you fell less "guilty" when smoking them. If you're American and are concerned about the high level of nicotine in your sigarettes, you should consider (besides quiting of course) importing your sigarettes from Europe...
