JERUSALEM - With the purchase of two more German-made Dolphin submarines capable of carrying nuclear warheads, military experts say Israel is sending a clear message to Iran that it can strike back if attacked by nuclear weapons.

The purchases come at a time when Iran is refusing to bow to growing Western demands to halt its nuclear program, and after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called for Israel to be "wiped off the map."

The new submarines, built at a cost of $1.3 billion with Germany footing one-third of the bill, have propulsion systems that allow them to remain submerged for longer periods of time than the three nuclear-capable submarines already in Israel's fleet, the Jerusalem Post reported.

What also makes Tehran dangerous, Beaver said, is that it may not understand the consequences of carrying out a nuclear strike.

"They (Iran) have a belligerent leadership and that's why Israel is prudent in ensuring that it has that deterrent capability," Beaver said. "What they (the submarines) are is a very good insurance policy."

If Iran refuses to stop its enrichment, at least it would realize the futility of trying to destroy Israel once and for all. It would no doubt be a mistake to try to wipe Israel of the map. What do you think? Should Israel deserve to have these subs? The Germans sold it to them.

deserve has nothing to do with it...they are being threatened and are responding accordingly.

Well Israel did say they may have to go "at it alone". Maybe that will be best. I am sure they will get support from other countries as well.

Well Israel can pretty much shame Germany into giving them whatever they want, let's face it.

"Deserve" them? That's entirely subjective.

Is this a positive deveolpment? I don't think so.

It makes it less likely that Iran is going to do anything stupid.
On the other hand, it makes it more likely that Israel will do something stupid.

Iran just have to spot their two submarines, take them out, and launch full scale attack just after. And Israël won't have a second strike capability. It's possible so Israël should keep his submarines hidden somewhere else than close to Iran and Israël so if they get strike, they send them to attack Iran.

These two subs arent Israel's only second strike capability.

Israel already has three operational German made Dolphin type 212’s (which are nuclear weapon delivery capable submarines) in its’ inventory.

The article explains the rest…noting especially the vessels are not Israel’s only method of delivery in the types of weapons discussed.

On that note (looking at subs), Iran has six or seven Russian submarines and manufactures her own mini-submarines.

What do they have else than surface to surface missiles and missiles air to ground mounted on planes? If they are nuked, the planes are gone and the missiles too.

They can launch from a frigate or a destroyer?

As another poster described, Israel already has 3 Dolphin class subs with nukes on them. This new deal just gives Israel a better version of the Dolphin that will stay submersed longer, thus giving Israel a stronger 2nd strike capability but not its only one thats all.
