I was thinking more along the lines of natural predators (Animals) that ate it. That could be indigenous tribes as well I suppose.

Maybe just something new, humanity hasn't discovered every single animal species and fossil. Maybe it's just another animal out there waiting for someone to find it.

Yeah, I just had found this:
In the south, the giant ground sloth flourished until about 10,000 years ago. Most cite the appearance of an expanding population of human hunters as the cause of its extinction.

Zoo- Probably. I'm thinking it could be a primate of some sort. I don't know. Giant Ground Sloths were huge. You would think that there would be many more sightings if one was roaming around. It could also be a large rodent... even a marsupial.

Large rodent... maybe something similar to a capybara yet larger? I guess that's a possibility. Primate is also a possibilty slothes being similar to primates in some ways. Especially gibbons, at least to me. Marsupial also sounds likely due to how strange appearances they have compared to many mammals.

That's what I was thinking. My thinking goes like this-
Giant Ground Sloth. If someone says "Hi I just saw a Giant Ground Sloth" I would assume that they saw a land mammal that does not fly.

So, I doubt it is a feline or canine because they would have identified it as something else. There are rodents and marsupials (such as large possums or tons of large rodents) that people may not be able to identify with a similar species. It could also be something hoofed.
