While drinking a chai in a local coffee shop, I overheard three men discussing the USS Liberty incident during the 1967 Six-day war. I listened as one man discussed Israel's intention to capture the Golan Heights in Syria during this time.

The Golan Heights (Arabic: هضبة الجولان Hadhbat al-Julan, Hebrew: רמת הגולן Ramat HaGolan) or Golan, formerly also known as the Syrian Heights, [1][2], is a plateau on the border of Israel, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria. Israel captured the Heights from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War (and again in the 1973 Yom Kippur War).

At the same time, the USS Liberty had been sent out to intercept foreign communications, including that during the Six-day war.

In February 1965, Liberty steamed from the west coast to Norfolk, Virginia, where she was further outfitted (cost: $20,000,000 USD) to suit her for a mission of supporting the National Security Agency by collecting and processing foreign communications and other electronic emissions of possible national defense interests.

In June, Liberty began her first deployment, to waters off the west coast of Africa. She carried out several more operations during the next two years, and went to the Mediterranean Sea in 1967. During the Six-Day War between Israel and several Arab nations, she was sent to collect electronic intelligence in the eastern Mediterranean.

Israel was afraid of the US finding out its intentions to capture the strategic Golan Heights in Syria and would put political pressure on it to remain within its borders. Thus, on June 8th, the USS Liberty was attacked by Israeli forces.

On the afternoon of June 8, 1967, while in international waters off the Sinai Peninsula, Liberty was attacked and damaged by Israeli forces; 34 crewmen were killed and 173 wounded. Considerable controversy surrounds this attack

One June 9th-10th, while the USS Liberty was out of commission and unable to track Israeli communication, Israel continued its plan to capture the Golan Heights.

During the Six-Day War of 1967 Syria's shelling greatly intensified and the Israeli army captured the Golan Heights on 9-10 June. The area which came under Israeli control as a result of the war is two geologically distinct areas: the Golan Heights proper (413 sq mi; 1,070 km²) and the slopes of the Mt. Hermon range (39 sq mi; 100 km²).

About 90% (80,000) of the Golan's inhabitants, mainly Druze Arabs and Circassians, fled or were expelled by Israeli forces during the Six-Day War. For various political reasons, Israel has not allowed them to return [12], which has led to the splitting of many families.

Although the official Israeli story is that it was an accident, the US has never officially accepted Israel's investigation, it did accept their compensation package.

Several books and the BBC documentary USS Liberty: Dead in the Water tried to prove Liberty was attacked on purpose. They claim that the ship was attacked to prevent the U.S. from knowing about the forthcoming attack in the Golan Heights, which apparently would violate a cease-fire to which Israel's government had agreed.[6] They are backed in this position by some representatives of the U.S. intelligence community. Critics claim many of the books and documentaries include incorrect assumptions and use fuzzy reasoning. For example, critics note that a document declassified in 1997 indicated that the U.S. Ambassador at the time had reported on the day of the Liberty attack that he "would not be surprised" by an Israeli attack on Syria, and that the IDF Intelligence chief had told a White House aide then in Israel that "there still remained the Syria problem and perhaps it would be necessary to give Syria a blow,"[7] which, the critics argue, indicate that Israel was not trying to conceal the planned invasion of Syria from the U.S.

There are other theories as well, such as

In 2003, journalist Peter Hounam wrote Operation Cyanide: How the Bombing of the USS Liberty Nearly Caused World War III, which proposes a completely different theory regarding the incident. In an attempt to explain why there was no support by U.S. forces as backup, Hounam claims that Israel and U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson had secretly agreed on day four of the Six Day War that Liberty would be sunk with complete loss of life. The attack would be blamed on Egypt, allowing the U.S. in turn to attack Egypt, thus helping out Israel. However, according to Hounam's theory, because the Liberty did not sink after two hours, the plan was quickly reversed, Israel apologized for the case of mistaken identity, and a cover-up put into place. Likewise the BBC documentary (2002) claims that the Liberty incident provoked the launch of nuclear-armed planes targeted against Cairo from a US aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean. They were recalled only just in time, when it was clear the Liberty had not sunk with all hands, and that Israel was responsible [9].

The Golan Heights is by far the most compelling theory, and there are still a host of officials in the US government that believe this attack was deliberate.

Both the Israeli and American governments conducted multiple inquiries into the incident, and issued reports concluding that the attack was a tragic mistake, caused by confusion about the identity of the USS Liberty. These conclusions have been challenged from several fronts, most notably by an organization of several Liberty survivors, as well as by some key former high-ranking officials who were in office at the time in the United States government, including the Secretary of State, The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Director of the NSA, and the senior legal counsel to the U.S. Navy Court of of Inquiry into the incident. The matter is officially closed for purposes of Israeli-American relations, but remains controversial in the public debate.

Israel's attitude is still the same, they don't have respect for the sovereignty of other nations as evinced by Ehud Olmert's recent comment that they will track Hezbollah to any country and don't plan to ask permission to enter that country and extrajudicially execute them as they have done many times in the past.

Yep, there are a lot of discrepancies with Israel's official story about what happened. Their mentality is not much different today.
