Since 2003, every August this nonsense chainmail will be forwarded here and there...

I have in my Gmail account a template of an email I use to reply to each and every idiot who forwards me the nonsense without verifying it for themselves. Here's the cut & paste (no worries about plagiarism or what-not, I wrote it myself) :-

This happened August 2003. It has already happened and it will not
happen again until possibly around the year 2287.

Don't bother waiting out front at night on that day looking for "a
moon-sized mars", another pack of lies...

From www.space.com...:

"So it's not like you're going to see something gigantic in the sky,"
he said. "It's not like Mars is going to look like the Moon or
anything."

Mars has a 79-year 'close encounter' cycle, so if you live for another
73 years from this day, you might be able to see another close (if not
closer) approach. But it is unlikely to appear as big as the moon
(unless the moon is high in the sky and mars is near the horizon --
then an optical illusion will happen and you will THINK it's about as
big. But still not as big as the moon.

I hope you didn't forward it already (the email you received)...

Maybe it isn't that Mars will become the size of the moon, yet rather that the moon becomes the size of Mars.

It definitely wasn't that the Earth moved farther away from both to make them all the same size. I would have remembered that.

I read in an email

The Moon is 2,160 miles in diameter - Earth is 8,000 miles - and the Moon has 16% of the gravity (mass) of the Earth.

Mars is 4,200 miles in diameter, and has 37% of the gravity (mass) of the Earth.

No dude I got an email like that. What mine said was that under a 75 times magnification then mars would be as big as a full moon.

Well i got my 12 inch scope ready just in case, but hey, through that it does look like the moon....

Space, it really is the final frontier!
