How long before SAM's are used?

I was talking with a member from ATS months and months ago in the chat room. We discussed the lack of defense the airline industries have against a SAM attack. (Surface to Air Missile)

With the recent turn of events; logically I can only see this as becoming more and more a reality because of tighter security at airports.

From box cutters to shoe bombs to liquid explosives.. Soon we will have to change into hospital gowns to travel anywhere before getting on a plane.

if I remember correctly, israeli commercial planes are armed with air to air missiles.
