Fred, the undercover kitten, who helped police nab an "undocumented" veterinarian was tragically killed by a car after wandering into traffic.

Fred received a Law Enforcement Appreciation Award and was honored at an adopt-a-thon benefit hosted by Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters. He had been "preparing for a new career in education," with a "significant role" in a classroom program that teaches children how to care for animals, the district attorney's office said.

Fred ran out [his caretaker, prosecutor Carol] Moran's back door into her yard Wednesday while Moran was attending to two dogs.

"He had to have hopped several fences" to escape to the street, Moran said. Neighbors found his body in the road later that morning.

Why? Why did God let this happen? Damnit....damnit all to hell! There is no God!

I'll....I'll never forget you Fred. Your death will not be in vain.

Just think of all the lives he touched in his short, but courageous life, I mean nine lives.

What a sad commentary that such news garners so little response, even on BTS. One would think that at least the PETA element would have something to say on behalf of Fred.

For shame, bts posters. For shame.

Fred is dead
And not a word to be said
For the feline hero--
zip, nada, zilch, zero.

An orphaned cat
Who knew where it's at
When it came to caring,
love, sacrifice and sharing.

After earning a medal
to celebrate his mettle
he bolted his home,
to discover and roam

This wonderful world,
Only to be hurled
Into fast lane traffic
to his death, quite tragic.

But, Freddie lives
and he still gives
Light, life and joy
To those who employ

His zest for living,
His generous giving,
His lusty courage,
To which we pay homage.
