scientists altered a mouse's dna and took it back in time by 500 million years to rebuild a hox gene which used to be present in ancient primitive animals.

I think all they did was engineer the appearance of one ancient gene to trace the evolution of brain development in that species.

And right now, the consensus among scientists is neanderthals were most probably a separate species from modern homo sapiens, so no worries there.
