I'm the last person to give advice about the components that makeup the heart of the computer but does the processor you select need to be compatible with your motherboard? If so the people on this board need to have that info unless you are starting from scratch.

I was always under the impression that you should purchase the fastest processor you can afford. I just purchased a new computer about a month ago. It has a Pentium D 3.2 GHz Dual Core processor and it's smokin fast. I couldn't be happier specially when running two system intensive programs because the processor can split-up the load and blaze....

Given your budget limitations, I think the athlon 3800 for $118.99 is a screaming deal.

It will also leave you some mor3e money for other things like ram and better video card.

BTW, what size ps do u have?

Is your motherboard compatible with AMD or Intel processors? Check this first.

Anyways, forget the two names above...just buy a handsome MAC

A fast processor is useless without sufficent RAM. The speed of the RAM is also important.

Well, it depends. You've got to let us know what motherboard you are using so that we can figure out what RAM and what processor your mobo (motherboard) supports.

The amount of RAM?

Depends of what operating system you are going to use.

And the type of RAM could change with the motherboard you choose.

Computers are tools, so the type of computer could change based on the type of use you want from it.

I think it's safe to assume a Windows NT-based system (XP, NT 4.0, etc..)

-----------

ArMaP is right about the usage bit. What do you intend to use it for? Word processing? Games (3D first person or simpler types?)? Surfing the net? Video editing?

Depending on what you intend to use it for, the RAM and processor requirement will differ.
