No, Rommel was far from Hitler's loyal number 2. In fact, Rommel was part of the whole bomb plot to kill Hitler, and was forced to accept suicide as punishment to protect his family.

Rommel was one of the far better persons in the Reich. He wasnt even that big on Nazi philosophy. he was a general first.

Hitler's most loyal bunch were Goebbels, Hess, Himmler, Goering, and Heydrich.

Canaris is a far more interesting person to study. He was a loyal German Officer but not a nazi supporter at all. In fact hated hitler. He was torn between wanting Germany to win the war and also wanting hitler to lose.

His behind-the-scenes machinations and how he helped the allies win is an undertold and underappreciated story.
