If the government of your country can persuade you to be afraid of something, they can use that fear to get you to accept some kind of limitation on
your freedom that you don't want under normal, stress-free circumstances.
Citizens of the US are accustomed to bang on and on about their freedoms. UK citizens in their more jingoistic moments may well recall the song lyric "Britons never never never shall be slaves." And yet in the US you are continually subject to government surveillance, travelling by air is a complete pain in the neck, and people are being arrested for wearing "peace" t-shirts. In the UK there's an ongoing campaign to make us all happy to pay for and carry identity cards, which is all-too-clearly another step on the road to making Britain a modern police state.
This, however, is but a preamble to the main point of my post, which is this. Is it possible that some of these websites that make predictions of doom and destruction (I'm thinking, for example, of the one that has inspired this rather depressing thread) are sponsored by some shadowy government department. When the original day of disaster passed peacefully, the doom-mongers immediately posted alternative dates - which are right about now.
Is is possible that one or more of these websites are financed by the government to try and keep everyone terrified about the next terrorist threat?
