Thousands of people gathered to rally against this terrible unneccessary war. Many Israelis as well as arabs attended. Apparently they too see things in the proper light. The sad thing is they were pelted with Garbage cans, and called traitors.
The pro-war rally which took place not too far from the Anti-war rally had its members calling out slogans like "A good Arab is a dead Arab," and "If only a rocket fell on you". Some violence did break out. I commend these people for making the attempt and going against the grain of the majority. They are true seekers of peace.

Tel Aviv: Thousands rally against war

Thousands march in Tel Aviv to protest Lebanon fighting, call on soldiers to refuse taking part in war. Clashes with passersby erupt during event, activists called 'traitors'
Attila Somfalvi

Thousands of left-wing activists, including many Arab citizens, marched Saturday evening from the Rabin Square to the Cinematheque plaza in Tel Aviv in protest of the fighting in Lebanon. The protestors held up signs with slogans against the war and called for an immediate ceasefire.

According to the demonstrators, a prisoner exchange deal with Hizbullah must be struck, as well as a similar deal with Hamas. Marchers also urged IDF soldiers not to take part in the Lebanon operation, chanting: "Listen up, soldier – it's your duty to refuse." Other slogans recited by the participants were: "The occupation is a disaster, leave Lebanon now," "Olmert and Bush have struck a deal – to carry on with the occupation," and "Children in Beirut and Haifa want to go on living."

A skirmish broke out between activists from both sides, while some infuriated passersby cursed the leftist protesters and called them, "Hizbullahniks." Others threw garbage bags at the activists and shouted: "A good Arab is a dead Arab," and "If only a rocket fell on you."

Fair play to them, but i think the anti war group's demos and sentiments will fall on deaf ears.

Smacks of pre 2000 if you ask me.............

I have my doubts about there being thousands of protesters. The protests in US where only 200 people, and that in a country with soon 300 million people... come on now... thousands?

It was a small group of protesters, hundred maybe no where near thousands. Also you should note, pieman that the MILLIONS of people that WHERE NOT at this "Protest". Just a few nuts that think their blind way of thinking is actually going to solve things. Please understand that people who think cease fires and peace talks have never been right, there was never an end to killing from terrorist during times of peace, they should and will be destroyed by the power of Israel and no one will give a $%& about a few hippie protesters.

Hey its your people not mine. There must be a reason why you would want to see your people constantly bombarded with suicide bombers though that you would opt for killing before you opt for peace. Maybe to perpetuate sympathy? Once thats gone, israel will have to fend for itself.
Its strange that you guys don't understand that 2+2=4. You kill 2 of theirs and 4 more new vengeful terrorists appear. Oh well its not Israels money supplying all the party favors anyway right? I predict one day you will be able to say proof positive that an entire nation will be that of a terrorist state and your lives will be miserable. The only thing I really worry about is what happens when it spills over to America.

I am not sure if you know, but I am American? Not Israeli, I just support and understand their situation. I agree that the attacks right now have created more terrorist then there was before the attack, but I think it can be reversed. Like after WWII instead of punishing Germany and Japan we built them up, gave them the support they needed to get them on their feet to be strong yet again. This was great, as half a century later our old WWII enemies are now some of our closest allies. Israel should lead the charge, along side the entire Western World, and rebuild Lebanon 10 times better then what it was before Israel attacked. A show of compassion, true dedicated compassion should be given to the people of Lebanon, the entire world should ensure the children get healthcare and education after this war, and they should pick up the bill for their entire infistructure to be rebuilt, also trade ensentives to prospure an economy. I agree with you Pieman that ruthlessly attacking and then leaving Lebanon created alot of terrorist, espcially with the young as these horrific scenes of war will stick with them the most, they need to be given aid, and alot of it. First we need to liberate them from Hezbollah, destroy the ones who ruined them by placing their proxy inside their borders, Syria and Iran.

Do that, and don't place puppets government, and i'll apologize for all i said about the zionist government that like killing arabs for the profit of their own great israël.

But that is very unlikely to happen because they hate arabs. Did the americans rebuild for the indians they killed and destroyed? And for the mayas? NO.

No, but more could have been done to create an Indian state, but they never had a country to begin with did they? The Lebanese government will need to be freestanding and not a puppet government. We did rebuild Germany, and Japan, and all our Allies, France, Italy, GB, and we saved Kuwait, which now when Bush SR. goes over there he is exhaulted like a king. Arabs do not easily forget, especially wrongs, if we show them western compasion and devotion and RESPECT then yes, they will live in peace with us. of course Israel will need to greatly soften its stance on Lebanon if it is rebuilt and stop being hostil, but now the current actions are justified.

At least, they were living all over america so at least we could have gave them a little country or something. I don't think Israël will stop until they have their great Israël, they bombed Syria and Iran and that almost it.

But i'll not debate this:

but now the current actions are justified.
because i know it would be worthless.

Good luck with that. vengence is a hard thing to erase. Look at the Armenians, The Turks and The Cypriots. Massacres are never forgotten as you can see by all the Holocaust books, movies, memoirs that you see and read. You cannot reverse it. You might try to make up for past wrongs but you cannot reverse someone that held their child in their arms for years, only to have them die in their arms battered and bloody. Germany and japan were nations and independent, the amount of war the Palis have been through has been decades worth. I would think the last people they would trust immediately would be the people that oppressed them

While its a nice idea, they had all of the above before this happened. Education in lebanon is one of the better in the ME with the American Univ. Of Beirut being topnotch. Why it had to happen like this is beyond me.

I would say Hizbollah needs to be disarmed. I doubt you will be able to dismantle them fully for a few years. Their Welfare and political arm seems to be satisfactory for their people and they will not just dump their only representation right away. I don't know why people keep thinking they are under orders from Syria and Iran. I have yet to see anything proving they are pulling any strings other then financing and supplying arms , maybe training as well.

Sorry for going off topic but I think he does this to everyone.
If you even remotely defend Israel in it's fight against terrorism he labels you as a Jew or Israeli.

Some Jew or Israeli just have kicked his dog or something

Again, sorry for going OT. I just thought that was funny.

I do agree that it is very unlikely to happen, how many arab slurs their has been on this board i will make a jewish one. 'The jews are to 'tight' to rebuild another nation after they have bombed it"
What did the americans have to rebuild for the indians, teepee's? And the americans had nothing to do with the fall of the maya, they maya civilization fall befor the eurpeans even knew that america existed. I think you are refering to the spanish wiping out the aztecs.
The thing is, as quoted befor by Pieman, 2+2=4. If Israel dont rebuild lebabnon after the war, it will jsut come back to bight them in the arse another 20 years down the track, when the cildren who have lost their fathers, mothers, and friends have grown up. Within that 20 years the hate will grow and grow, and the attacks on Israel will never end.

There you prove the problem with the situation, if we did rebuild the entire country far better then what it was, which is possible, they would still hate us and still attack? Hezbollah does not represent the population of Lebanon, they represent the issues of Iran, if you look at how Iran acts, Hezbollah imitates it.

How do you propose then that there be peace in the middle east? Letting everyone just endlessly fight Israel? Israel ends up slaughtering people when they are attacked, if helping Arabs doesnt cause them to be peaceful, because their hatred is so deep then how do we negotiate with them? How does this problem ever get solved? Can it ever be solved?

I admit endless raids by Israel doesnt help in the long term at all, but it does secure their personal security, while destroying that of their neighbors, and that also is not a good thing, as it breeds more terrorist and more resentment but it is better then letting Israel getting pumbled from all sides.

I would like to kow how you propose this situation can at least be helped, my plan would be for a massive international assistence in repairing the war torn countries Palestine and Lebanon. Right now we are only serving our national interest as no one has found a way to fix the region.

I would bet the presidents plan is to tear down the entire region, destroy all the regimes and rebuild them like Iraq. That is bad news for us isnt it? Cheney already told us to expect us to be over there for decades.

I don't even think Israel could rebuild Lebanon even if they wanted to. They may take a loan out from the US to do so, but the US would rebuild themselves if it came to that.

Well the only true way to solve the conflict in the middle east, is to have a time machine. Go back to after WW1 and give the arab people their nation, and go back to WW2 and try to stop the holocaust and the relocation of the jewish people.
Wont happen so....
I believe the best situation for the middle east, although compelx could work. Lets go back to the start of the nation of Israel. The jewish population moved to palestine from 1881, to 1946. In this time zionists organizations bought up business and property within palestine. Then in 1947 the UN general assembly came up and aprroved the UN partition plan handing over 55% percent of palestine to the jewish people, and 45% to the palestianian people, the proposal was never accepted by the palestinians.
So to make a analogy of this, imagine that heaps of immigration to California by native american indian tribes, they buy up land and businesses. Then the U.N announces that becasue of the plthy the native american people sufferd that they should have their own nation, then say that 55% of California is now a seperate country, then all non native american people are then kicked out of their homes who live in that 55% area. Would you find that as 'fair'?
I believe that the nation of Israel should not exist. This does not make me anti-semetic but it does make me anti-zionist. If the jewish people never tried to make their own nation on other people's land, the situation would not exist at the moment. The jewish people should of lived within palestine, thus making palestine a multi-cultural country consisting of jews and arab. By today they would of been a stable country, in which jewish people could of got into positions of power within palestine thus showing fair representation of the people.

Back to how to solve the problem today. Who the bloody hell knows!

Sorry for the large quote but...why stop only 100 or so years ago?
Jews didn't just pop out of thin air. As far as we know they've been there for thousands of years. And as far as we know they've been conquered by many nations and empires yet still return to that same area. What makes the last 100 years any different?

Yes i can go back further. Here is a quick summary from wikipedia about the Israeli history.

Starting around 1200 BCE, a series of Jewish kingdoms and states existed intermittently in the region for more than a millennium.
Under Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and (briefly) Sassanian rule, Jewish presence in the province dwindled due to mass expulsions. In particular, the failure of the Bar Kochba Revolt against the Roman Empire in 132 CE resulted in the large-scale expulsion of Jews. It was during this time that the Romans gave the name Syria Palaestina to the geographic area, in an attempt to erase Jewish ties to the land. The Muslims conquered the land from the Byzantine Empire in 638 CE. The area was ruled by various Muslim states (interrupted by the rule of the Crusaders) before becoming part of the Ottoman Empire in 1517.

en.wikipedia.org...

With that said, 1200BCE untill the mass expulsion in 132CE Thats around 1300 years that Israel existed, Muslim rule from 638 untill 1517, then the Ottomans took over. Considerd the turkish empire, which is of arab ethniticity, they ruled the land unstill they fell in 1929. Then came the british mandate.

So in essense, Arabs have ruled Israel from 638 untill 1929, again thats around 1300 years. So in essence they have both ruled the area for aslong as each other, its just that the arab people have more modern claim to the land than the jewish people do.

Could you imagine if thousand of year old land claims could be called up today? Could the Australian Aboriginals claim australia back? White men have been in australia for jsut over 200 years, yet the aboroginal population has been dated to been the oldest race on the planet living in australia for thousands of years. How about the red indians? How about a rediculous one like the Gauls decendents comming back and claiming france? I could go on and on....

What makes the last 100 years different is that the jewish people claimed land that wasnt theirs, and hasnt been theirs for over 1300 years.

Ohh another intresting thing about the ottoman empire.

one other indirect source of this unity was allowed for by the laws of Islam, which stated that Muslims, Christians, and Jews—who constituted the vast majority of the Ottoman population—were all related in that they were "People of the Book"

en.wikipedia.org...

Cant imagine Israel having the same views.

This actually made me laugh. How enlightened! I was e even tempted to use it in my signature.

Perhaps you are just cynical, though I imagine that you will respond by saying that you are a realist and history will bear you out. That may indeed be correct. Doesn't mean it is 'right' however.

I'm glad people are willing to stand up in a public demonstration against the fighting. I'm quite sure that the vast majority of people, on ALL sides, simply want to lead peaceful lives, regardless of politics etc., it's just that they are either too scared to stand up or don't think their voices will make a difference.

If people did take to the streets en masse, perhaps the belligerents would take notice. I'd be suprised if it happened, mind.
