While the headline hints at good news, the overall statistics are appalling. Thirty percent of all pregant women in South Africa were positive for AIDS. THis figure was virtualy unchanged from the previous year. It is hoped that holding the numbers steady may be a sign that education and the like may be taking hold.

But when 30% of you population is at risk from day one its a scary proposition at best.

CAPE TOWN, South Africa - The AIDS infection rate among pregnant women in South Africa stayed at about 30 percent last year, according to a government report Friday that said the infection rate was stabilizing.

"This is encouraging to note, but a great deal of work still needs to be done to ensure that new infections no longer take place at all in South Africa," Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang said in his department's report.

The only quick way to bring down the rates would be outright illegal.

Jsut to get them to stabalize is good, if there was a noticeable growth rate.
