Anyone hear about this? Gulf War ex-POW's sued Iraq under a law G.W. BUSH signed declaring Iraq a terrorist state. The ex-POW's won the case and now the Bush Justice Department is trying to have the case thrown out. The hypocrisy of this administration is simply staggering. It's ok for the Neo Cons to send the troops in to secure Iraq for rape of their resources and the defense industry's financial benefit, but not ok for ex-POW's to seek compensation for the hellish miseries they suffered while serving their country. Ex-POWs fight for right to torture payments

10/27/03: WASHINGTON — The Bush administration is quietly piling up victories in a legal battle to block payments to 17 U.S. combat veterans who were captured and tortured in the first Persian Gulf War and won a lawsuit against Iraq for nearly a billion dollars.

The former POWs — whipped, beaten, burned, electrically shocked and starved by their Iraqi captors in 1991 — say they are baffled by the administration's refusal to let them collect any of the Iraqi assets now under U.S. control, and by the Justice Department's efforts to overturn a federal-court decision upholding their claims to compensation.

"I don't understand why they want to see this case go away," said Lt. Col. Dale Storr of Spokane, who today is an airline pilot and serves in the Air National Guard.

"My country can be mistaken," Storr said, "but I'll still serve it and love it. I'm proud to wear the uniform, no matter what comes."

He has proved that. Parachuting through a fireball after his Air Force plane was hit by ground fire on Feb. 2, 1991, Storr was captured by the Iraqis and beaten, kicked in the head and urinated on.

During interrogation sessions, guards shocked him with an electrical device, beat him with clubs, broke his nose, dislocated his shoulder and burst his left eardrum. He was held for 33 days.

The government that heaped praise and medals on the ex-POWs has drawn a line at extracting a financial price from Iraq for their ordeal.

When you are in the military you do not have rights re: what enemy does to you in most cases (unless you are jewish of course).

Now that the US has administered Iraq the hold the assets and these are needed to rebuild Iraq and should not be paid out to a few people when the lives of many can be helped.

Why did these jokers not petition the courts before on this case? Even if they had I doubt the socialists friend Saddam would pay them for any harm done to them.

4. Halliburton and Bechtel are getting most of that money. Not the people of Iraq. But then, you wouldn't know that because you dwell in the same non-reality as the NEO CON chickenhawk brigade, who have absolutely no understanding of Iraq, concern for them or experience acutally fighting a war.

6. The case and law came before the war. They won because under the legislation - I can't even believe I have to explain this to you - that is precisely why they were awarded the money. IRAQ WAS DEEMED A TERRORIST STATE. What grade are you in?
