A La Plata County man has tested positive for the Bubonic Plague. There have been 49 cases of the Bubonic Plague in Colorado in the last 30 years. On the average there are 10 to 15 cases reported in the U.S. each year. The health Dept. has reported that animals including house cats, squirrels, and prairie dogs have tested positive for the Bubonic Plague this year. It is being said that this year there seems to be a lot of the Plague going around. Symptoms begin about six days after being exposed.

During the past 30 years, there have been 49 reported cases of plague in humans in Colorado. Human contraction in the United States occurs mostly in rural areas, with an average of 10 to 15 cases each year nationwide.

In Southwest Colorado, seven animals - including squirrels, household cats and prairie dogs - have tested positive for plague this summer, according to a news release from the health department.

"This year particularly, there seems to be a lot of plague, and it is widespread throughout the county and region," Westberg said.

The Bubonic Plague is treatable if caught early. The article says there has just been one confirmed in Colorado, but that number may change, since the incubation period is 6 days. And the Bubonic Plague is the most common plague in humans, but there is something more that I think should be noted. Since there are cases of this reported nation wide each year, and at least one official has stated that this seems to be an active year for the plague, I think the possibility should be considered that this may not be a natural occurrence.
