The Australian government officially requested Israel temporarily hold its fire so that 4 bus loads of Australian citizens could safely be evacuated. Israel has refused the request. Foreign Minister Alexander Downer elaborated that the Australian government had suggested that a "safe corridor" be established so that foreign nationals could evacuate safely."The Israelis have so far said that this was a war zone, that they wouldn't agree to our requests." said Mr. Downer

ISRAEL had refused a request for a short ceasefire in Lebanon to allow for the evacuation of Australian citizens, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said today.
Four buses carrying 90-100 Australian citizens left Beirut this afternoon (AEST) for Syria, Mr Downer said.

The Australian Government was also confident of chartering a ship, at a cost of $250,000, to evacuate Australians from Lebanon tomorrow, he said.

But Mr Downer said Israel had refused an Australian request that Israel stop its bombing raids in southern Lebanon for a short time, while trapped Australians were evacuated.

Thanks Israel
The only side blowing up buses of escaping civilians is Israel, not Hezbollah. It's nice to know that we can count on such a good international friend as Israel.

If Israel should now blow up any of these buses like it did to other buses of civilians leaving for safety in Damascus then they can kiss Australian support good-bye.
