I need German names or words that sound cool. They must begin with P or Q. They don't have to be a "name", but could be just a German word. For example, if the German word for Noble or Strong or Story or Guard began with P or Q and sounded good, I'd use that.

Why? Because I'm getting a German Shepherd Dog (puppy!
) and I get to give him his registered name when he's born.

Anybody got any cool German words beginning with P or Q?

Thank you!

Does it have to start with "P" or "Q"?

Rohleder

It's a character in the german version of the movie "Stalingrad".

edit: I guess you said clearly "P" or "Q", so...

Polka?

Yes, I did say that clearly, didn't I?

It can be any word. I just don't know any German at ALL. Hellmutt, I was hoping you'd check in. I would love a list of words to choose from. Here's what I have so far:

Philo
Pasco
Paavo
Petchel
Prinzen

Quinzi
Qawi

Just give me all the German words you know that begin in P and Q

Thanks you guys.

Based on the manner by which you can search I think you should be able to cobble together a name with meaning and purpose. That is what you're seeking, no?

Good luck, happy searching and Please tell upon making your choice.

Pflanzen plant
Pferd Horse
panzer tank
Puppe doll
Prinz Prince

P's and Q's are pretty rare in german and when they do show up their pretty harsh sounding. Dont forget that Q's in german sound like Kv not Kw

Thanks everyone! Turns out the letters are Q and R. I hope it's R because there are a lot of good German names for R! I'm thinking Rainor (Strong Counselor)

I'll let you know, 12m. You'll get sick of hearing about my new boy!

I just hauled out my german dictionary (written in high german, so it's *old*.. published in 1929)..

Quecksilber (quicksilver)
Prunk (pomp, splendour, ostentation)
Potenz (power)
Poltergeist ( (hob) goblin / or ghost, depending)

if it's a female.. Petze.. *ehem* (b*tch, she-bear)

There's lotsa words.. not so many q's as p's.. I tried to find ones that have a good meaning and sound kinda cool..
And of course, now I realize you're looking for r's.. hrmph.

Range (young scamp, romp) -- suiting for a pup, methinks (and the 'e' is prounounced mind you.. us Germans like saying every letter we put in the danged word.. no silent e's or gh's..)

Reellitat (umlaut (two dots) over the a) (solidity, respectability; fairness)
((a w/ umlaut sounds like the a in kangaroo; a w/o umlaut sounds like 'ah'))

Ritter (knight)

My cat's named Tigerkonig (with an umlaut over the o).. which means Tiger King.. which fits, cuz he looks like a tiny tiger.

Lemme know if'n you want me to look up any individual words that you can't find on the online dictionaries..

And do post pics of the pup!!!

P.S. is it a purebred? careful with the hips if it is.. I've heard of plenty of shepards who had to be put down because their hips were closing in on them..

Knecht Ruprecht

Knecht ist the old german word for a helper on a farm or in earlier times for a servant in a rich house. Ruprecht is in german the helper of santa claus.

@Desiria: "Potenz"
But cool name for your cat.
In some few regions they spell it Stuhbentieeeescher.

(Stube(n) = Room(s))

Or call him - like in the film The Live Of Brian from Monty Python: Purrsche!

Purrsche is a very funny version of the word Bursche, which means fellow.

I don´t know the size of your dog, but you can also use: Pferd

- Pappkamerad (A fake model of a person made of chalkboard to learn shooting)
- Pappnase (Unreliant friend)
- Paprikahuhn (Chicken filled with paprika)
- Paolo Pinkel

- Quarkstrudel
- Querbeet

Do you know from which federal state?

Yes, he's a purebred, top-of-the-line showdog. From a very good German line. His parent's hip ratings are in the 70s (if you know what that means- it's REALLY good!). Of course there is no guarantee with GSDs, but I feel sure I'm taking as little risk as possible. I had 2 of the most conciensious GSD breeders in the US helping me find just the right pup and my breeder came with a personal recommendation.

Here's his Sire:

www.temarshepherds.com...

And his Dam:

www.temarshepherds.com...

And here is a pup out of the same Dam as mine will be (he's not born till next month and we'll get him in October)

I highly recommend this breeder if anyone is looking for a GSD. I've been through the wringer with detailed medical, temperament and pedigree questions and they have answered every one with a smile.

Thanks for all the help, everyone! 12m, those german dictionaries really helped! I have named him.

R - Reiner (pronounced Riner) means Purer
Q - Quell (pronounced Kvell) means Source

Now, my husband and I will give him a totally different call name because I didn't like being limited to a German name AND a letter, so couldn't come up with something I liked that was genuinely German.

Thanks again!

Yes, Polylux?

We're giving him the call name of Lyric.
That's pretty much decided. Unless of course we come across something more wonderful in the meantime... Or if I see him and another name screams out to me.

Here's his little puppy crate, with the cover I made and the quilt I made... Of course the quilt won't go in till he's potty trained for the most part.
I'll use shredded newspaper.

And he's not even born yet!
I'm going nuts waiting for my arrival!

Sweet!
I always wanted a German Shepard.

My suggestions would be:
Panzerfaust
Panzershrek

Both names are infact titles for different types of German Rocket Launchers from either WWI or WWII, not sure which.
I think they're cool, and I would particularly suggest Panzerfaust, just because it sounds better.

P.S. If you really wanted to catch peoples attention, you could name him Adolf.
J/K, good luck raising him.
