BHUBANESHWAR: India has conducted its first test of a nuclear-capable ballistic missile with the range to reach the Chinese cities of Beijing and Shanghai.

The Agni-III missile, which has a range of 4000km, was launched yesterday from Wheeler Island, 180km northeast of Bhubaneshwar in the eastern state of Orissa, defence officials said.

In May, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the Agni-III, India's longest-range ballistic missile, was ready but that the country was observing "self-imposed restraint" before testing.

Opposition parties criticised the delay, blaming US pressure.

New Delhi and Washington reached a landmark deal in March that will have sanctions lifted on India's access to civilian nuclear technology.

Sunday's test launch came just four days after North Korea sparked an international outcry by test-firing seven missiles.

A Defence Research and Development Organisation source said the Indian test was successful.

Well, it's like suddenly all countries are willing to compete in a totally new standoff, who has the biggest missiles? Who can throw them farthest? Why is the feeling crawling up to me that world war III is coming ugly close? Expectable to say that no uproars have yet occured on this test, but what about relations between Pakistan and them? Isnt this just aswell a provocation to Pakistan?

Discuss your thoughts,

every country tests its missiles. This is why i stayed out of the whole "north Korea" thing....they were just testing their stuff. Same as USA, UK, everywhere.....sure i wish that no country had these weapons. But they do, and they are going to test them. You cant pick and choose who is allowed them and not.

Though DRDO says test was successful, In reality test failed.

Agni 3 didin't achive the required altitude.

mod edit:

There is no need to quote everything in the previous posts

Do you happen to have a source yourself then?

The missile may not have achieved desired altitude, which eventually resulted in its CEP being severely compromised. However Agni III may not have been a complete failure, as the designated target was observed by IN ships and the missile may have not hit the target with the desired CEP.

This a day before the Indian Geosynch launch vehicle spectacularly failed 40 seconds into launch. The 7 strap on rockets lost synchronism and the rocket veered off course thus forcing ground control to self destruct it.
Sad few days these for the Indian space program and one hopes they get out of it fast as many more big things like a moon mission are envisioned for the next 2-3 years.
Note that the INSAT 4C satellite weigging 2+ tons was lost in the GSLV failure.

GSLV Failure

Note: There are two threads on this so either we separate topics and rename one title or we close one thread? mods...

P.S: Agni III has nothing to do with Pakistan. It can travel 7 times the breadth of Pakistan and so this missile is purely meant for the chinese seaboard.
