The USA, Japan, other Asia, Russia, or other Europe? What can the USA do to protect itself besides missile defense systems?

NK's worst enemy is Kim Jong-il. His people are hungry, yet he is wasting money on some rockets that aren't even working

Sometimes when I'm at work I pretend to be doing "research" and I'll just read up the propaganda of a totalist state like North Korea or Turkmenistan.

From the stuff I've read, the official party line is that the USA is the cause of all their suffering.

-If it wasn't for USA, they'd have conquered South Korea and united the whole peninsula

-USA is the ultimate source of capitalist anti-revolutionary subversion. The Japanese, SK'ers, HongKongers et al are only surviving because they are fed by the American fascist bully-boy.

-They don't even really trust China or the Old Soviet Union/new CIS. Their fellow travelers stabbed them in the back by not going all out against capitalist couterrevolutionary drives up the Korean peninsula.

-Kim's father invented something like "jeuche," which seems to be a sort of self-sufficiency. This is the doctrine that NK ought to be self sufficient and produce EVERYTHING its people need. Trade with the west is evil, and lets the capitalist bankers sink their claws into the freedom loving working-classes, gaining a toehold for the eventual overthrow of marxist civilization.

Even fellow commies cannot be trusted, and NK must go it alone, producing their own washing machines, pistols, and dishrags . . . . which is pretty funny, since S Korea, which is just as small, is one of the global "haves," and all because of that evil pernicious free enterprise thingy.

well said dr_strangecraft, I fear that North Korea or any other nation costs 1/1000th of a life in America or its allies. What are the "truth" links between North Korea and Russia?

Interesting question.

Although the US is clearly trying to pick a fight with NK I really doubt the US is NK's chosen enemy.

So their best missile can, on a good day, hit Alaska - all that effort / risk just to kill a few polar bears and salmon? A ridiculous and pointless strategy.

South Korea can be hit with scud so again no point in using NK's long-range missiles.

I reckon most of this is aimed at Japan - the old, traditional Korean enemy and a way of involving the US but placing them in a real strategic dilemma: defending Japan is clearly not going to be seen as sufficient justification by Beijing.

Maybe Kim Jong-Il isn't as 'crazy' as the US would have us believe?

The USA has 10,000 nukes. NK is only a recent entrant. Truly, I am only really concerned about Russia.

Why do you assume the threat has to be a direct one to the CONUS?

NK hitting Japan would knacker the World economy and topple the US (and everyone else) into financial meltdown.

Well... I'm glad you asked that.

There were rumors that Kim Jong made
a secret trip to the Kremlin in June.

Report: North Korean Leader Kim Jong Il in Russia

Thursday, June 22, 2006

North Korea Preparing Test for Missile With Potential to Hit U.S.
SEOUL, South Korea — A leading South Korean newspaper reported Friday on the possibility North Korean leader Kim Jong Il has traveled to Russia via train, citing eyewitness reports.

www.foxnews.com...

The NK missiles were launched towards Russia, not Japan.

The launched missiles fell down on the territory which is closer to Russia than to Japan.

**

They all fell down in the north-western part of the Sea of Japan. The missiles went down to the sea floor inside Russia’s 200-mile economic area. One of the missiles hit the sea surface only several dozens of kilometers far from the town of Nakhodka, the Far East of Russia.

english.pravda.ru...

It's obvious what happened...

Tsar Vladimir & Kim Jong were playing skeet

In other words...

What a shock to NORAD and the Pentagon when someone else...
with amazing new technology... shot down the missiles.

I have read "literature" that NK might greatly support Russia compared to the USA. And Russia might be deeply depressed about losing the "Cold War" to the USA.

Depression is frequently a psychiatirc term and might create radical behavior that we are uncertain of. Psychiatric analysis of nations and governments has never been more important.

I think we are all agreed that what North Korea is doing is just completely crazy, so crazy that I actually wonder whether we are being told everything relevant to this story.

1. I can understand them wanting to tell their people that they have fired a missile. This might be "great" because they live in a totalitarian state where firing missiles must carry some sort of national feel good factor (maybe like football?). After all if you're a North Korean your TV will say "what a great day it is and what a great day it’s been for your great country".
But why exactly North Korea bothers firing anything outside its own borders is a mystery to me. They can tell their people anything. So surely if a missile can travel half the length of their own country it could also be on the moon for all the North Korean people would care-no? After all they have no access to outside news sources; so there’s just the voice of government.

2. As for self defence: Well surely once they had biological weapons they were safe from invasion-liquidation? And surely after they went dirty radiation bomb Plus they were safer still? So why did they need to fire that missile? Couldn’t they have given some of its fuel to their people for their stoves or something?

3. So I thought it might be charity; that North Korean missiles might carry the slogan "Make Poverty History". But even that doesn't make sense as the North Korean test has made us think of economic sanctions, not more wheat aid to some stupid communist party charity country.
Maybe Kim I1 hasn’t seen sanctions coming? But there's no chance of that is there? I mean he fired missiles back in 1998 and saw the world getting pissed then. Trouble was Dubai wasn’t beating his chest like a gorilla with less than five years to go; in fact 9/11 hadn’t happened. The World was more chilled out with Clinton just having sex with his girlfriend in the Whitehouse.

Furthermore if Kim Jong Il really can't see destructive results from the West coming his way as a result of these tests then he must be an extraordinary thick man as opposed to a wise one? Though that's nice to believe; it too doesn't make a lot of sense ether, I mean he did get the power after his father and rules his own Stalinist theme park in a way that would make Stalin proud.

So what's really going on? Do you too also not buy into the “Kim Jong 1I needs to defend himself some more argument”? (At least given what we are currently told).

If you listen to the N Korean party lines clearly the US is their biggest threat.

-They say we started the Korean War it wasnt them who invaded.

-If it wasnt for the US Korea would be unified

-They blame the US for the poor and hungry people in N Korea (even though we dont restrict humantarin aide of any sort, infact we send loads of food there though not much gets to the people the military seems to get first dibs)

- Of course its the US that wants to invade and wipe them out

- Oh yeah and we stole the gold medal from them in the Olympics
I swear im not making that up.

Google search some of the propoganda its so anti-US its almost absurd.

NK and Russia do not have very good ties right now. Sure they are better than its relations with US or Japan, but Russia is not interested in helping or investing in NK right now, let alone risk conflict with US over it.

Who says Russia is depressed about losing the Cold War. Those who are in power now are businessmen- billionaires who became rich thanks to capitalism in post Soviet Russia. They despise communism, they do not want communism, they do not want Cold War. They want to make money and stay in power. It is really tiring seeing people express caution and animosity towards Russia today. Believe me, no powerful people in Russia are depressed about the end of USSR. It is rather funny that many Americans and Western Europeans feel animosity towards past and current communists (such as Cuba). NK just wants to ensure its future existance without American meddling. Cold War is over, and you won. Enjoy it and stop scaring the world #less with the old Cold War propaganda. You just have to face it that democracy (if you can call what US has a democracy) is not the only political choice left in the world, and if someone wants to live out their communist or socialist dreams you cannot prevent them from doing it. I do not support the NK government, but I am open towards all opinions, and can see what they are trying to achieve.

Good post I agree with alot of what you said

Russia may not be offically a super power any more but they are still a nuclear super power. But when you get down to it their leaders want to stay in power and be rich like leaders all over the planet.

War between the US and USSR was never going to achieve that goal for either sides leaders and they played a proxy war game to get more power around the world for most of the Cold War, proving time and time again neither side wanted a full war with each other. They had alot of chances if they really wanted such a war.

This thread is pointless and indicative of the falling standard of debate on ARS.

A question was asked and the answers supplied completely ignored - if you just want to spread falsehoods about ColdWar2 then why not state that in the original post?

I agree.
Why the constant remarks in the media..."These missiles could hit the US soil"... are there not any other countries that these missiles could hit?
"They were launched at the same time as the shuttle"... pure coincedence in my mind... not everything that happens is about the USA.
Embrace all cultures and not try to run them all.
And no... I am not anti-american... just open minded.

True enough.

On the other hand, if you go to the People's Democratic Republic of Korea website, you can see that their official doctrine is that the real source of all human suffering and anti-communism in the world is ultimately the USA. They say that South K and Japan are simply "capitalist lap-dogs" of the US.

I've posted some of their government's rhetoric on a BTS thread called How To Speak North Korean

Happy Trails.
