China, North Korea's neighbor and most important ally, urged all parties to remain calm.

"We are seriously concerned with the situation which has already happened," Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said in a statement on the ministry's Web site.

China should be urging North Korea to knock the grandstanding off before the US gives them a sound spanking.

The US won't give North Korea "a sound spanking" as you put it, without China's say so, and even then, it won't be a walkover.

Further, it would not surprise me in such a scenario, that China would go into North Korea first, either to defend North Korea (remember the pact the two have), or to keep the US off China's doorstep, or to topple Kim Jung Il who they may see as too much of a loose cannon to tolerate and installing "their own man".

Perhaps a bit of all three.

Ah but who said militarily?

It could be an economic spanking. All it would take for N. Korea to collapse would be a withdrawal of Chinese and/or US aide to the reigon.

How NK would react to this is a different matter.

They could simply look for new economic trade from other nations....

They said Cuba would collapse when the Soviets collapsed.

But they are supposed to be starved already, are they not? It would make North Korea even more isolated, less engaging.

They said in the past sanctions would be a declaration of war.
