"OBJECT N" the secret Russian Tank

Topic started on 4-7-2006 @ 12:33 AM by prelude

I came to know the following from Russian news sources.

Russian designers are working on a program titled "The Integrated technology for 21st Century." The defense Industry wanted to keep the project a top secret but a Russian website called Trud.ru leaked info about this project (along with some other projects) in 2004 (for which FSB is trying to screw them )

The project’s official name is unknown …… unofficially called “Object N”

Developed in the city of Nizhni Tagil but supposed to be stationed at some secret Russian city.

There is no estimate about the number of tanks of such category present …but considering the cost of such a project(well that’s my estimate ) …I am sure there must be a very few of them .

Following are properties of Object N :

The machine has “ highly efficient electronic intellect- a miniature of the super computer developed by the Russian Academy of sciences ”.

“It receives information about a target through optical, thermal imaging and infra-red channels, which include a laser range-finder and a radar station.”

It has a 1,300 horse power engine - the most powerful tank engine in the world.

Its weight is 45 tons: the lightest tank among armored vehicles of the class.

The shells are “capable of breaking the armor of any other tanks”.

A special electronic detector of Object-N's shells does not let a moving target escape out of target.

The tank can be operated manually as well as via some control center .

Its interesting to note that in 2004 pravda.ru reported about a future tank named
“object N” which was declared by the defense authorities …the tank had most of the features stated above apart from :
1 the super computer and
2 Control via control center(apart from manual control)

…….. but that “object N” (the one reported by Pravda) has undergone trials in 2006 and has been named “Terminator XL” and is scheduled to go in mass production at about 2010 ….

but Trud.ru reported that “object N” is completely a new tank which is already there in one of the secret cities of Russia …and the defense authorities have deliberately given “Terminator XL” the name “Object N” to fool external intelligence agencies.

According to local news reports Trud.ru even presented original pictures of two such tanks in their website but due to some “unknown cause ” those pictures were removed from the site on the next day of its publication .

I have looked for info about this topic in the net but did not find much …if anyone of you know anything about the project please post it here .

www.army-technology.com...

The M1 has a 1500 horsepower Lycoming Textron gas turbine engine

The German Leopard 2 has a 1500 hp Europack MTU MB 873 diesel engine

The Challenger 2E has a new 1500 hp Europack MTU 883 diesel engine

The Merkava 4 is powered by a GD 883 V-12 diesel engine rated at 1,500hp

The Leclerc is equipped with an SACM V8X-1500 Hyperbar diesel engine providing 1,500hp

The tropicalised Leclerc is optimised for tropical and desert conditions to meet the requirement of the UAE. A new powerpack and diesel auxiliary power unit has been installed and the hull is extended at the back to accommodate the powerpack and larger fuel tanks. The Euro Powerpack has the MTU 883 V-12 diesel engine providing 1,500hp.

As you can see the most powerful tank engine claim is incorrect, makes you wonder how much of this is propoganda

As Popeye already pointed out there are plenty of more powerful 1500hp tanks. IIRC there are versions of the upgraded M1A2 that have a 2500hp turbine in them.

1300 bhp would be the most for a vehicle in this class, which is perhaps what they mean.

Only 45 tons? What sort of armor does it have?

The names look strange. Russian tank prototypes used to have names of the structure 'Object 123' - see www.tankmuseum.ru... - this one seems a bit short. And 'Terminator XL' is surely somebody's joke.

Nothing concrete about armament, but the AI control sounds interesting. The thing is though, the Russians don't exactly have a manpower shortage, labor is cheap, and they don't like complex electronics int he military kit.

File under "interesting if true."

Does seem to be a interesting tank. Russians always have been very capable with designing tanks and this tank might be the next T34 if it offers something revolutionairy.

the russians have around 30k tanks, but only like 1500 are active, the russian tanks are always known to be rugged, hard-built, not too complex, and easily built and maintained, but they always offer great durabilty and performance.
