isn't the military supposed to train people to NOT retaliate by killing and/or raping civilians?

shouldn't that be drilled into the heads of fighting forces?

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (AP) -- Federal prosecutors charged a veteran of the Iraq war with murder and rape Monday in connection with the killing of an Iraqi female and members of her family.

Well, in any demographic, there are going to be some rapists/murderers/thieves, whatever - soldiers are no different. They're human, and as such, they're prone to doing things like this, things like Haditha, things like Mai Lai.

The goal of the military should always be to toe the borderline between recruiting/creating an efficient soldier (and killer, let's face it, that's a big part of the job), and an uncontrollable one. A soldier that can't be controlled is a liability.

This was not retaliation, this was just a rapist with a uniform. No code of honor, no bond of brotherly love - this was a sadistic act committed by an anti-social scumbag (assuming the facts of the case are as stated so far in the news media).

This is no more like Vietnam than it is like any other war where one nation's military occupies another nation. This has happened all throughout history.

Maybe it's the stress, but I doubt that's it. More than likely, the little # and his friends just thought they could get away with it, seeing as it's a war zone and all...

Human oppurtunism, greedy, immoral self-interest at its worst. Try them, and hang them if they did, in fact, commit these crimes. The Iraqis are the primary victims, but other soldiers will ultimately pay the higher price. This is the sort of thing that bolsters and nurtures the insurgency.

They want us out of their country, to keep things like this from happening. We would be able to oblige them, if not for the fact that our military is a defacto security provider for oil services contractors exploiting that newly opened, and highly profitable mid-east market.

We are not talking just about Rape here - but Cold-Blooded Murder; or should I use the word Massacre, since it more appropriatly describes this event:

The Washington Post quoted Omar Janabi, who said he was a neighbor, saying Abeer Qasim's mother had told him on March 10 that the young woman had complained repeatedly about advances made toward her by U.S. soldiers at a nearby checkpoint.

Janabi told the newspaper he was one of the first people to arrive at the family house after the attack. He said he found Abeer sprawled dead in a corner, her hair and a pillow next to her consumed by fire, and her dress pushed up to her neck.

The paper said death certificates from Mahmudiya hospital identified the victims as Abeer Qasim Hamza, 15, shot in the head and burned; her mother Fakhriyah Taha Muhsin, 34, killed by gunshots to her head; her father Qasim Hamza Raheem, 45, whose head was "smashed" by bullets; and Hadeel Qasim Hamza, 7.

First we notice, that these so-called "Soldiers" had repeatedly made moves toward her at the local checkpoint. And since it looks like she turned them away, they decided to take things in their hands; and apparently they did that very well.

I hope they find an IED with their name on it...
