On that Star Treck episode "City on the Edge of Forever", they don't in any way dial where they are going. It is simply a machine that quickly shows human history and if you step through, you end up in the time that happened to be showing. So it's not quite the same as a Stargate.

Well.. This goes to show how much TV influences your mind. I personally love Stargate, my favorite Sci-Fi show. For all the old timers out there.. Isn't it strange how art imitates life?
