You're right it's creepy. The shadow across the earth in the beginning reminds me of the alien ship in the movie Fourth of July.

See how it's title was shortened to ID4 for some advertising purposes, so then if there's a sequel it'd be called ID4 2.

I saw this a day or so ago, its amazing to watch actually.
