What type of Nonprofits would help people the most?

I have been thinking about this for years. My rant is that if I did NOT go on Operation Iraqi Freedom in January 2003, I would have likely have gotten one of the two plans started. One was a scholarship fund, one was progressively promoting proper hygene and the third one was a "think tank" that reviewed city/county/state problems and issues and would offer recommendations on how to correct it. (Which would have taken years+ to get started, which was currently off the table at the time).

Since I am living in a smaller city/town in Illinois, it really wouldn't work here. I'll start it after I leave to a large city.

What Nonprofit organizational idea would impact society for a greater good? Any ideas?
