SOLO, Indonesia - A reputed leader of the al-Qaida-linked terror group blamed for deadly bombings across Indonesia on Thursday accused President Bush and Australian Prime Minister John Howard of waging wars against Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Militant cleric Abu Bakar Bashir also called on Bush and Howard to convert to Islam, saying it was "the only way to save their souls," adding that families still grieving after the 2002 Bali blasts that killed many foreigners should also become Muslim to find "salvation and peace."

Bashir, 68, was released from prison Wednesday after completing a 26-month sentence for conspiracy in the Bali bombings that killed 202 people, was at a hardline Islamic boarding school that has spawned some of Southeast Asia's deadliest terrorists.

The firebrand cleric also declined to directly condemn young men who carry out bombings in Indonesia in the name of Islam, saying they he still considered them "holy warriors," because they believed they were defending the oppressed.

But he also said they misguided and wrong to use bombs in a country at peace.

What does this tell you? Telling the President to convert to Islam? Telling the victims' families to convert to Islam? Doesn't criticize those that did the bombings. I don't need to say more...

This could be fun, two divergent fundamentalist religions fighting over who gets to have Bush as a convert - it's what The Crusades were really all about.

Then The Grove steps in and declares him in the name of Set and Moloch. And then.......???

What more would you expect from a 'firebrand' cleric. Have you ever heard of Dr. Ian Paisley?

On a serious note, however. The Americas, both North and South, seem very strongly Christian, so the idea that Islam is going to get a significant toehold on these two continents seems fairly remote, presently.

Don't know about you but I would like to convert this cleric guy to "Tomahawk".

That said (looking at the world through the clerics eyes) it would be funny if George Bush found his true routes were in iSLAM. I'm sure it would do a lot to improve U.S Iranian relations. And who knows we could even see them praying for more oil together? (Just like when Bush visited Putin for rather similar reasons).

Then again it’s not so bad what the cleric said when you look at the world through his eyes once again.
Just like the many fundamentalist Christians in America he believes that his religion is the one true faith. Therefore of course it would make sense for the victims to convert to Islam (no offence to them).
Basically his statements says a lot more about how fundamentalism screws up good meaning logical thought into something as useless as it is absurd. And that is something all people from any country accommodating religion with fundamentalist followers have to identify for the sake of sanity.
