I have been waiting to post this for most of the day.

I have no clue what is going on, but today in the northern suburbs of the DC area, ash (or something like it) fell like very light snow flurries. This was NOT pollen or any other plant material that I know of... I believe the event extended west of the city as well... not sure about east or south.

Anyone else see this????

WTF was it?????

Hi Loam,

We get similar ashfalls a lot out West during fire season. Sometimes from hundreds of miles away.
Any big fires upwind?

No, I wasn't in a position to do so. I was engaged in several business meetings and had occasion to be outside several times during the day. It was tremendously distracting, and I had to avoid making such a big deal about it.

Me too. Nothing....

The geographic footprint would remove any singular construction cause, I think....

This was very weird....and I wasn't the only one who noticed...

I'll see if it appears tomorrow as well.

I thought about that too....but I'm coming up dry on that as well....

Could it have been carried from further away by the remnants of Alberto?

I dunno if you guys have them there but are there still any active incinerators in any of the old buildings or garbage dumps there? That used to happen often before they got rid of them in NYC.

ThePieMaN, none that I am aware of... Moreover, I have never seen this happen before in the area.

Interesting thought..is it possible?
There were lots of fires in FLA just before Alberto..Could all of that junk have been swept up and carried..hmm..Does the ash look semi intact? whatever THAT means...LOL
I think you know what I mean though..

YES! Very white flat flakes averaging 1-2mm in size...

EDIT: You know, the more I think about it, why not Alberto??? It would make sense.....I think....

It certainly doesn't sound Impossible.

I've had burnt branch tips, even identifiable is pines, floating down on my property before. These things made it over the Sierra Nevada Range, over 100 miles or so.
The other ash particles looked just as you are describing..very white, flat..

It's very interesting, what you've found..any idea how long it lasted?

I first noticed it around 10:00 am. It continued with varying intensity to nightfall. Once it got dark, I could no longer tell if it was continuing.

Nygdan, it had the consistency and shape of ash. Plus, 1-2mm is HUGE!!!!

I still haven't found any reports on this.

I'm from that area originally, so I'm interested.
I'll check back in later if I find anything, or to see if any of you locate some info..
