616 NOT 666.
The oldest extant fragment of Revelation has 616. This manuscript is probably third century. A century earlier, Irenaeus discussed the fact that there were already Greek copies with 616.

Am still reading thru this thread and not sure if your question was answered in here yet. I have something to share, forgive me if someone else has already mentioned it and I haven't gotten to it yet, am still reading.

Like you, I've been asking that same question nearly all my adult life. I've found the info at the following link to be THE very best answer I've ever heard, makes total sense! The whole page is interesting, scroll down past the links and read carefully about the anti-christ, 666, and a pope.

Remember though, there may be many names and phrases that can come up in value to 666, only one of those will be THE true antichrist. Personally I think it's going to be a pope, as I wrote about in my previous post in this thread.

666 is already associated numerically with Nero, Christian persecutor-extrordinare; also, 7 is regarded as a number of "perfection" in the Bible, occuring numerous times, though God/Christ never said "MY mark is 777, the beast's is 666" or anything like that. 666 is simply falling short, on every level, of heavenly perfection. Let's think about Nero for a sec....what was his beef w/ Christians?: They worshipped their own God and refused the Roman practice of Emperor-Worship. Rome is already associated with the coming Babylon in a figurative way many times in the scriptures...a "Rome-ish" superpower, an Empire which reaches across the globe, affects all trade, and encourages "worship" of the ruler/state (we call this patriotism, when the ideals of a nation supercede the will of God)Does this sound like any nation we know if in modern times?...

And a lot of people, including masons believe Lucifer is good. Problem arises when Christians think about evil as soon as someone mentions Lucifer. Like today when people mention Muslims, almost everybody associates them with terrorists.

Remember you do not know how to govern yourself so others have to do it for you. If you have absolute freedom would you wrong the innocent or do right by the innocent. It wouldn't make a BIT of difference considering that is what happens now ANYWAY!

And don't forget people did not always worship God in church. They did it from their home. Imagine if you tried to make your own group effort to worship. You would be shut down if it did not conform to what everyone else was doing. That is probably why people had secret societies to begin with. Or just remained "the lonewolves".

Things always gotta get worse in order to get better. Otherwise you wouldn't know the difference. Much less appreciate it ALL.

The information is ten years in its development as it originated in Feb 1997.

I have noted however, that a great number of people have misunderstood the prophecy and the writing. They have assumed that prior to the death of John Paul II, that the next pope would have to be the Antichrist, and that he would have a new name. That is false. From the very origin of the numbers, it was inevitable that the papal record revealed that there was no John XVI and no Benedict X and no John XX. Although there never was any pope John XX, there was a John XVI and Benedict X, but both of these popes were deposed as antipopes. Now the definition of an antipope does not do justice to this, because it fails to include John XVI and Benedict X in that definition, but the fact that these two (anti)popes did exist, and because they affected how the count was first performed, then the possible outcome of the papal election after John Paul II had to include the possibility of the pope that followed John Paul II, could also be an antipope.

It is the convergence of ALL the information of the prophecy that indicates this. Benedict XVI, is of the first "five" that Rev 17:10 says is "fallen" and along with 2Thess 2 agrees. The antipope is "taken out of the way".

I have always retained this possibility in the interpretation from day "1" of the research, simply because it revealed that event twice in history. It could not be ruled out. And now that the election is long past, it has become very clear that the events of history have followed the prophecy with a profound accuracy.

What you will see, is that the Antichrist will come, and appear as though he is Christ. He will pursue to take the seat of Peter. Benedict will not yield his place, and he will thus be deposed. The Antichrist will not be elected by the College of Cardinals, but receive the popularity directly from the people, deceived by his personna.

Can you expect that every single part of prophecy that reveals the identity of the Antichrist, would be subject to being corrupted with false interpretations, long before the truth is revealed? So far, every prophecy has received a false interpretation; like NERO! How was the book written with the first century Christians in mind??? HUH? They have all died, and, it is predicted by Christ Himself that He will come and destroy this Antichrist, and since Nero was not killed by Christ, then he cannot be the fulfillment of that prophecy. Also; Nero was not the "8th" but the 5th emperor.

666 and the Islam connection. This interpretation of 666 will not be welcomed by Muslims, however it should be of interest to Christians. Consider the facts of what 666 will be doing... forcing the world to accept its doctrines, or be beheaded. In what we now refer to as 527 A.D., the concept of dating using the AD/BC method was first introduced. In considering whether 666 may refer to a date, one must consider what dating methods were in use at the time the Revelation was written. Most scholars agree it was writen no later than 300 AD. So, the AD/BC system we use today was not in use. At that time, the most recently introduced calendar and method of dating was introduced by Julius Caesar, on the date which we now refer to as January 1, 45BC. To better understand, consider this date as the starting point of the new dating system... call it simply J. Therefore, 1/1/45BC=0 J. Following this up through time, 1/1/1BC= 1/1/44J. There is no 0BC or 0AD. 1BC is immediately followed by 1AD, so, 1/1/1AD=45J. Following this through, 1/1/622AD=666J. So, clearly based on the dating system in use at the time the Revelation was written, Islam had its birth in the year 666, which we today refer to as 622A.D. To a non-Christian and especially to a Muslim the idea of relating Mohammed to the devil might seem unfair in that Islam maintains itself to be a peaceful religion, however, what we are really talking about here is the Anti-Christ, and any believing Muslim will gladly profess that Jesus Christ is not and was not the Son of God. Clearly Islam is an anti-Christian religion. To see its own prophesies come true, Islam must somehow, some day, some way, see to it that all other religions are wiped out. It is quite likely that Revelation 13:15 refers to the time when the Imam Mahdi appears on the scene. Not necessarily a man or a physical being, but rather an image. An image of the one which Muslims are anticipating. The announcement that the Imam Mahdi has arrived will go out whether he "appears" or not. And although Muslims presently believe that the Imam Mahdi will set up a world order peacefully, a call will go out to start the killing, and that order, it will be believed will be an order of the Imam Mahdi himself. True Muslims will have no choice but to comply. In Islamic states Christians, Jews, Hindus, Atheists, and all who do not accept the doctrine of Islam will be killed legally, while in non-Islamic states an attempt will be made through tactics such as suicide bombings and etc to reduce the non-Muslim population down to a level wherein it will then be subjegated. When one considers the prophesies of both religions, Christians who have read the Revelation can see the amazing irony of this: Muslims believe Mohammed to be the last prophet, whereas the last prophet according to Christian prophesy is none other than the false prophet of the Revelation. Christians who believe the way of salvation is through faith that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, can certainly conclude that Mohammed, having led so many to believe otherwise over a period of over 1300 years is by far the biggest anti-Christ of all anti-Christs. Another irony which Muslims fail to realize is this: Mohammed referred many times over of the Day of Judgement which would come upon all who "are not of The Book". Muslins maintain that this Book is The Koran and therefore those who do not follow the Koran are worthy of death. To put it very bluntly, Muslims are so blinded by this idea, that they do not even take into account the fact that the Koran was not written until after Mohammed death. The Book Mohammed spoke of (having heard stories of it) was the Book of Life as in Revelation 17:8, not the Koran which didn't exist at the time.
In any case, whatever the mark of the beast is, whether literally the number 666, or a symbol, it will be revieled by an angel to every living soul..no one will not know its signifigence when faced with the choice to worship it or die. Rev 14:9

Lucifer If you bare in mind was supposed to be Satan before he chose to fall.. so therefore that name equaling 444 still stands as 'holy'.

Apart from the fact the name Lucifer being attached to Satan is still debatable as it was the Roman 'poetic' name for Venus.. The morning star.. tho they say Jesus is the morning star... so how can Lucifer (''satan'') and Jesus both be the morning star?

Christians tell me simply... the morning star is Lucifer.. The Morning Star is Jesus.. (yes.. the capitol letters being the difference) tho Im still to find the capitolisation in the bible I havnt looked..

JESUS = 666 in alphanumeric base 9 mode.... I take this Jesus (MAYBE) as a false character and a false story..
