On June 8, the Dartmouth chapter of AD, Alpha Delta, was raided by local police. The search seems to be related to a sex tape filmed by members of the fraternity from the class of 2003. Hanover Police Chief Nicholas Giaccone is neither confirming nor denying the supposition. For now, the subpoenas and warrants associated with this case are sealed.

A sexually explicit videotape created by an Alpha Delta fraternity member from the Class of 2003 was the premise behind a Thursday morning police search of the organization's physical plant, according to several sources close to Alpha Delta fraternity and other persons in the Dartmouth Greek system.

Fourteen police officers from the Hanover Police Department entered AD at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday and searched the organization's physical plant for over five hours. The fraternity had received no prior notification of the search and at least one member of Safety and Security was on hand throughout the search, according to Hanover Police Chief Nicholas Giaccone.

Giaccone would neither confirm nor deny whether the warrant involved a sexually related tape because the warrant and court affidavit have been sealed for the duration of the investigation.

The warrant was obtained as part of an investigation that was launched in October of 2004.

Due to the nature of the evidence seized by Hanover Police, I can only assume that this is related to internet porn. Could this possibly be another sex-scandal at one of America's most prestigious universities? If so, in an investigation that's been underway since 2004, local police either chose to do this now because of the Duke investigation, or despite it. I wonder how this will be handled in the national media.

The only mention of this story on CNN, the channel, not the website, was a vague reference to the fraternity immortalized in 'Animal House having been raided. I guess we'll have to see how it plays out.'

I'm not sure if I can do this, and I'm sure a mod will correct me if I can't, but I wanted to post another article I found about this incident, from a surprising source, the Irish Independent, but the site requires registration.

Police raid riotous 'Animal House' in hush-hush probe
Saturday June 10th 2006

THE fraternity house that inspired the riotous movie 'Animal House' has been raided by US police.

The raid follows a 21-month investigation so secret that the authorities won't say exactly what it is about.

More than a dozen officers spent five hours searching the Alpha Delta house at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire.

They hauled away two duffel bags and ten crates full of evidence, including a computer tower, a videotape and two sledgehammers. They also arrested a 19-year-old student for drug possession - marijuana, according to local press reports - but said the focus of the investigation was on something other than drugs.

All documents relating to the investigation are being kept under seal. That suggests the offences being investigated are both serious and highly sensitive.

Alpha Delta became synonymous with spoiled, upper-class students getting drunk, staging pranks and throwing toga parties thanks to the 1978 movie 'Animal House' starring John Belushi.

One of the writers on the film, Chris Miller, had been a 1964 graduate of Dartmouth and a member of Alpha Delta, which was the basis for the story.

Fraternity members are depicted dropping fizzy candies into the college swimming pool, having corpses from the medical school delivered to an old boys' dinner, decorating the trees with underwear and causing the toilets to explode.

Fraternities across the United States are periodically excoriated for their debauchery, their elitism and the cruelty of their induction practices, known as hazing.
