I've never seen any indication that President Bush is gay, no way.............

It just can't be true.

How could you be gay with such a manly car ?????

Perhaps he's just insecure about his penis size, so he has to control the whole world.

Hi opensecret...

Actually, I think I disagree about gender roles not changing over time. In my lifetime and in the UK culture I think I've seen quite a change in gender roles. I'm not trying to claim ANY expertise in this area, I'm just saying it like I see it... (don't want to tread on anyone's degree specialty!)

In the UK at least, girls growing up now are MUCH more assertive than they were when I was a child. Or at least that's how it seems to me, and I teach at a number of schools, including one all-girl school.

I'd also say there's a growing number of instances where household roles are reversed and the woman's the breadwinner.

Or are you talking about something else and I'm not getting the point here?

Oh, and didn't Margaret Mead find some matriarchal cultures?

[edit on 4-6-2006 by rich23]

Good points. without digging up the original post I think I said gender roles stay somewhat stable over time and geography. I mean this in a wide sense. Men are more likely to make war and hunt, as well as invent physical things, etc. Women are more likeley to raise children, run households, etc. Men are more likely to have direct, problem-solving styles of communication. Women are more likely to have empathic, inclusive styles of communication. Men are more likely to use violence and confrontation against enemies, while women are more likely to use manipulation, rumors and ostrasization (sp?) against their enemies.

The above is largely true accross time and geography. Of course if you look at the fringes of such a large sample you may find anomalies (Amazons, etc.).

The OP was stating a fairly radical and fringe view in sociology that gender is a total construct. I simply cannot agree and the rationale seems more emotional and political than rational or logical.

I always thought the Pontiac Aztek looked "lesbian/butch-ish"...but that HARDLY indicates any kind of "conspiracy"!

I will say this though...

Watching television, one might think that 20-40% of the world was Homosexual. This is far from actual reality, with the number being someplace under 10% The ratios are FAR, FAR slanted than what actually exists in a random sampling.

I do belive that we are being acclimated by the powerful people in Hollywierd (some of whom might be homosexual) to make us "used to the idea" -- when in real life most Americans don't deal/see much of the homosexual scene.

These people are using their power over mass media to bring homosexuality into the mainstream.

BTW, I never said any of this was BAD (im not trying to start any arguments)...I just found it an interesting observation on my part.

action mushroom you would be suprised how many aren't open with it. i would say about less then 10% is completely open with it, that doesnt mean alot more are gay just not coming out. Look at my ex governor Mcgreeve, had a wife and two kids turned out to be gay.

It might give comfort to closet cases to belive that "hordes" of like-minded homosexuals are "in hiding just like..." -- but it's just a closet dream.

Shows like Will & Grace totally skew reality and promote a, "it's cool, trendy, and fashionable to be gay" message.

I've seen ever increasing homosexual themes in radio, television, and all other forms of mass media in the last 5 years or so.

Once again, im NOT saying that this is a BAD thing

I just can "tell" when someone is trying to change other's thnking through subversive media tactics.

I dont think either of us are in a position to say how many people are actualy gay or closest cases. We cannot read minds, nor are we in other peoples minds. In saying that we dont know who is or isnt a closet case. Trying to say who is or isnt is like trying to say a person si democratic or republican when all the person is doing is eating a pizza. Regardless of what we think, we dont know what they are thinking.

Like i said my ex governer was gay and he had two kids and a wife. We didnt expect it, or even think about it, but it was true.

And along those lines, I read somewhere that few people are 100% gay or straight. Most of us fall somewhere between those two absolutes, having some characteristics of both sexual preferences.

But, I guess that is another topic for another thread :p

This is very true. I've had a few relationships in my life, from fooling around with other boys after school, several years with girlfriends, a number of years in a monogamous relationship with a fine woman, and now 17 years with a wonderful man.

I've loved them all, and we've enjoyed our time together.
How could anyone be critical of that..............................

Thing is, though, how do you go arond estimating percentages?

While I have always tried to remain open to the idea that I might not be 100% het, it is nonetheless true that men do not arouse me sexually at all, I'm afraid. Most of my close friends are male, and I'm physically comfortable hugging both gay and straight male friends (if they themselves are comfortable with that kind of intimacy)... but I've never wanted any man the way I have wanted my sexual partners.

When I was at university, I acquired one particular close male friend, and we would sometimes greet each other in public by kissing on the mouth - no tongues, mind you - and we would do this in front of our girlfriends simply because we knew it would wind them up.

At one point we were alone in his room, and greeted by kissing, and there was this rather interesting mutual moment when we both considered the option of going further, and simultaneously realised we just weren't interested. Our friendship, if anything, deepened as a result, and it was to some extent physical, we would embrace and so on, but the way one would with family members (unless you're from Norfolk or certain backwoods areas of Louisiana where being your own uncle is not unusual).

So where are those few percentage points? I really don't think I'm in denial when I say my physical embraces of my men friends are to do with friendship and have no sexual component. I have NEVER felt, with a man, that delicious thrill of being with a person of the opposite sex, of being close to that person, and wanting desperately to touch them but not yet knowing for sure if one's feelings are reciprocated. For me those feelings are quite distinct and to say that my hugging another man is displaced or suppressed sexuality would be, I think, just incorrect.

also mind you feminine tendancies in no way make you gay. Personally it turns me on when a female takes the aggresive role in sex. I know that by society standard the guy is suppose to take the lead and be the aggressive one but i just think it hot when a girl takes the aggressive role. Does that make me gay because I think its hot to not be the aggressive one even though im a guy? I highly doubt it. Im not saying that im 100% heterosexual, because for all I know i may have some tendencies. But as far as I know, I havent experienced any yet, and just because I have a couple characteristics that most would label "feminine" does not make me gay.

Poetry could be considered gay because of the getting in touch with your interself isnt manly like. Does that mean Tupac Shakur was gay? If so tell him that as he was getting head from this female in public on a dance floor.(lol in an interview he was talking about the craziest moment he had after becoming famous.)

You can't just draw a line down the page and put the straights in one column, and then the gays in the other column. It just won't work that way because our needs and desires change over time. Your circumstances can change your point of view.
And I like to think that the diversity in the human race is what has made us strong.

I have never marched down the street demanding rights for homosexuals because I've never felt the need. I've had full benefit coverage with my husband for most of our relationship and he worked for the government.
I don't expect the Catholic Church to be forced to perform gay marriages, but I expect society to accept people for who they are and just get on with living their own lives.

Live and let live.

basically. a comic once said (although it may sound rude) its not like two homosexual guys will be having sex on your front law because you allowed gay marriage. Im not expecting any private religion to ever except homosexuality, but in truth, what the hell business is it anybody elses what sexual preference you are?

Marriage is marriage, morality is not suppose to be a law damn it. Thats what Im really sick of. People pressing their damn morals to become laws. Every law this country was founded on was so that you cant infringe on another persons rights. Murder infringes on a persons right to live, rape infringes probably multiple liberties like happiness and such. Stealing infringes on pursuit to happiness and ownership. Everything is traced back to an action that infringes on another persons right to whatever they want to do. not morality (assholes).

sorry for the pissed off rant but it gets me aggervated when people start pushing moral laws. this isnt some islamic state in the middle east where you can make your religion the nations religion and moral views, america is for everyone, no exclusions.
