I've been to a few small concerts at one of the local Indian casinos lately and had a blast.

So, in this thread, if you know good local bands in your area, identify the area the band plays (say, by a noteworthy city within 100 miles, or general geography) what they play, how many stars out of 5, and what you'd compare them to. Never know, some of us might discover something we really like.

I've heard three that I really liked recently, all from Southern California, around Palm Springs (Maybe 70-80 miles down the I-10 from UC Riverside, keeping in mind that UCR isn't actually on the 10)

House of Broken Promises is a loud obnoxious metal band that plays local bars. I'm not aware of anyone mainstream who is really comparable at the moment- maybe Disturbed would sound that way live if an ametuer were running their sound board. 3 Stars, and possibly going somewhere if they can learn to enunciate and then apply some effects to their vocals.

Eagles of Death Metal don't actually play death metal in any form that I'm familiar with. They sound like modern rockers with very slight metal influences covering the Doors. It comes off better than you'd think, but I had a few drinks in me at that point. 3 and a half stars.

The Spores (i think- there were two bands playing with Eagles of Death Metal but only one of them was on the ticket with them) have to go somewhere. They were cool. Ever wonder what would happen if Rob Zombie raped Bjork and they had kids? Now I know. 4 and a half stars, they just need to do more on stage, get their singer to wear a little less, and up their vocals in the mix just a little.

Oh, and I'll give a shoutout to my cousin and his band Inverted Insanity, which is having a lot of problems with member dedication. I've only heard their drummer play though- the drummer being my cousin.

The Eagles of Death Metal are meant to be taken as a joke. If you don't get the joke then obviously you're going to be upset when you find out that they don't play death metal.

Anyways, a few local bands here in the Twin Cities, Minnesota that I enjoy:

Twelve Gauge: www.twelvegauge.org
This band plays old school style heavy metal/thrash. If you are sick of the new style of metal and want to hear someone that hasn't forgotten where they come from, then check them out.

ArcAngel: www.arcangelband.com
This is a female fronted metal band here in the twin cities. They are a bit glamish and fetish orientated.

The Ugly Fat Kids: www.theuglyfatkids.com
This is a female fronted punk band, however don't expect their front woman to be some sultry babe. She is a bit of a tom boy. Their sound is a bit poppish but they sound a lot like the likes of Rancid and NoFX. They are very humorous though and every live show they play, they make sure you have a lot of fun.

Screaming Mechanical Brain(SMB): www.smbband.com
This band compares themselves to Marilyn Manson and SOAD but I think they can't really be compared to anyone. They play a mix of metal and electronics with a lot of political orientated songs in a sarcastic and humorous manner. The lead singer plays a keytar! They do an awesome rendition of the song "Happy Happy Joy Joy".
