An Ilyushin 76 landed in Mogadushu last Wednesday. The plane was allegedly loaded with weapons to the Islamic militia with regards from Eritea. Eritrea supports the Islamists and might be fighting a proxy war against Ethiopia in Somalia.

Experts see proxy war under way in Somalia

A mysterious Russian-built cargo plane believed to be loaded with weapons landed in this capital Wednesday, setting off a fresh round of allegations that Somalia has become a proxy battleground for its neighbors Eritrea and Ethiopia.

The United States and other Western powers have cautioned outsiders against meddling in Somalia, which has no single ruling authority and can be manipulated by anyone with money and guns. But there's little sign the warning has been heeded. Somalia's virtually powerless government charged on Wednesday that the Ilyushin-76, only the second flight to land at Mogadishu International Airport in a decade, was packed with land mines, bombs and guns.

The new proxy fight between Ethiopia and Eritrea is officially denied by both countries, despite witness accounts and reports by the United Nations describing Somalia's plight.

Well, at least two of Viktor Bout's planes were there so that plane may have been one of them. Actually, I think it was. Anyway, the Islamists are busy forcing their beliefs on the population. Raiding cinemas and flogging marijuana smokers...

Witnesses said at least 30 people were detained in the raids when heavily-armed Muslim gunmen known as the "Soldiers of Allah" entered two packed cinemas halls in southern Mogadishu's Wardhiigley district. They dispersed audiences of more than 300 people who were watching Indian Bollywood features, deemed pornographic by the Islamists, and carted off projection equipment and generators, witnesses said.

"We managed to arrest 30, but most of them fled," militia commander Nuur Hassan Raghe said. "They were watching movies that are ethically unfit." He added that his men had also caught several people smoking marijuana and had flogged them for violating Qu'ranic proscriptions on the use of intoxicants.

Ethiopian soldiers helped government troops retake the town of Burhakaba. Now the Islamist are determined to take it back with help from Eritrean soldiers. Troops are massing around the city...

Somali government troops and Islamist fighters are massing around the central town of Burhakaba a day after it was taken by government forces.

Ethiopian soldiers are said to have helped the government troops. With Eritrean soldiers suspected of helping the rebels, diplomats have warned the situation could spiral out of control, engulfing the whole region.

Hundreds of Islamists have now converged on the nearby town of Lego.

Diplomatic sources estimate that between 6,000-8,000 Ethiopians are now inside Somalia, bolstering the government's faltering control. Ranged against them are not just the well-armed militia of the Islamic Courts, but also about 2,000 fully equipped Eritrean troops, says our analyst.

I wonder why the United States is involved there...

If I am not mistaken, there are indeed reports that there is oil in Somalia...Unexplored reserves much like Sudan. No wonder why China is supplying weapons to the Sudanese government to commit genocide. So they can get the oil, same with the US. Poor Africa is always raped.

So would the U.S. be backing the Islamist fighters ?
The problem is that Africa has been this way since time began and will never change.
Think about the people you are dealing with here, they all grew up with malnutrition and war and anyone that had any brains got out a long time ago. Malnutrition alone has created a society of almost total mental retardation and then you throw in some good drugs and guns and a few religious leaders and there you have it.
The only thing that America did wrong was to feed a people that were overpopulating a area of the world that can not sustain that population.

I understand that that sounds very bad but a lot of it is true. The effects of generations of malnutrition are well documented and over population is a big problem. I do not hate these people but the world is a vicious place outside of a few modernized countries.

The Islamists have taken another key city in Somalia. They seized Bandiradley, north of Mogadishu. The Islamists say they are now planning to march on Galkayo, a major town in Puntland. The warlords said they only did a "tactical retreat" from Bandiradley and claim they were not defeated...

"We have taken control of Bandiradley after heavy fighting," said Mohamed Mohamud Jama, the Islamist spokesman in Mudug, where the town, about 700 kilometers (440 miles) north of Mogadishu, is located.

"They attacked us and we retaliated," Jama, the Islamist commander, said Sunday. "The result is clear, they are losers and the Islamic courts will win day-by-day until Sharia law is implemented all over the country."

Seems like the Islamists might have lost a battle near Baidoa, NW of Mogadishu. The transitional government claims victory and say they have inflicted heavy losses on the Islamists. They say hundreds of Islamists are dead while other hundreds are wounded.

Rival forces pounded each other with heavy shells and rockets near the seat of government in Baidoa, about 250 kilometres (155 mile) northwest of the capital Mogadishu, and hundreds of terrified civilians fled the battlezone. "The onslaught of the Islamic Courts Union and their terrorist allies has been defeated," the information ministry in Baidoa said, adding that "hundreds" of Islamic fighters had been killed.

The fighting occurred on the day European Commissioner Louis Michel held talks with President Abdullahi Yusuf and Islamists chief Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys and announced their willingness to resume stalled peace talks and halt hostilities.

Ethiopia has moved tanks into the battle zone near Baidoa. More than 500 Islamists have been killed the past few days. Most of the dead are innocent children which the Islamists have been "forced" to send to the frontline...

Somali Information Minister Ali Jama said fatalities were reported on two fronts east and south of the Baidoa, about 250 kilometres (155 miles) northwest of the capital Mogadishu. "The combined total from two fronts is over 500 Islamists killed since Wednesday," Jama told AFP. The figure could not be independently verified. "Most of those killed are innocent children who have been sent to the frontline. It is unfortunate because we have been forced into this ... we do not like shedding the blood of children," Jama added.

Baidoa is heavily fortified and protected by a large contingent of Ethiopian troops but its defenses will not hold, intelligence sources tell Pajamas Media. Ethiopia has allied itself with Somalia’s embattled transitional federal government.

Reached by Pajamas Media, Dahir Jibreel, the transitional government’s permanent secretary in charge of international cooperation, confirmed that a massive offensive is underway. Jibreel said that the ICU launched an “offensive on the seat of the government from three directions: Burkhakabo, Idale and Dinsor.”

Jibreel is guardedly optimistic, noting that the Islamic radicals “sustained heavy losses.”

“They will overrun Baidoa,” a military intelligence officer told Pajamas Media. “It’s only a question of when.”

The Islamists are calling for help from the international community. They want help to stop the "invading forces from Ethiopia". Thousands of foreign fighters have already joined the Islamic forces, and they call for Islamic fighters from all over the world to join the "holy war" as well...

As usual, all the US haters jump on the malicious rumors that the US is supplying weapons to the Somali warlords.

Meanwhile, back in reality, the Somalis leak the contents of the "secret" UN report on who is REALLY shipping weapons to Somalia, and guess what, the United States isn't on the list,just our old friends from Africa and the Middle East - oh those fun loving Arabs.

Highlights and excerpts from the report: confirm that Syria, Iran, Eritrea, Djibouti, Egypt, Libya and Saudi Arabia have all sent military personnel, weapons or military supplies including food and medicine to the Islamists, based in Mogadishu. While Ethiopia, Uganda and Yemen have all sent weapons and military equipment to the interim government, holed up in its sole outpost in Baidoa.

I'm not sure if that was directed at me. If it were: I'm not american. I have no interests in defending or attacking the US or making threads about US inventing HIV. And I've never claimed that the US has supplied weapons to Somalia. I've claimed that Viktor Bout have transported weapons there. One of his planes is landing in Mogadishu in the photo at the top of this page.

Sorry, I hadn't even read your posts, just the oh so common opening accusations that the US was shipping weapons to Somalia, killing baby seals, and working with aliens to dominate the World.

This thread will probably quieten down now that the facts have been released, after all, there's no fun in insulting the Eritreans or Libyans.
