Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, in Washington today for his first official visit to the US as Israel's PM, says that Israel would prefer for the West to handle Iran. He says that Iran is much closer to nuclear weapons than previously believed, but that the situation cannot be compared to the situation with Iraq in 1981, when Israel bombed the Iraqi nuclear reactor at Osirak to prevent that nation from nuclearizing.
JERUSALEM — Iran is just a few months away from acquiring the technological know-how that will allow it to build an atomic bomb, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said in an interview broadcast Sunday.

The key issue regarding Iran was not when it builds a nuclear bomb, but rather when it acquires the knowledge they need to manufacture such arms, Olmert said in a televised interview

In 1981, Israel's air force attacked the Iraqi nuclear reactor at Osirak, destroying the facility. But Olmert said the situations cannot be compared, and Israel will try to persuade the Western world to impose sanctions on Iran.

I think I hear war drums. Israel is just announcing that it isn't their drums, probably because the US asked them to. We don't even have to find evidence this time out, because they're playing up the "knowledge is as important as an actual bomb" angle. Israel may be saying sanction them, but Foxnews television seems to indicate that Condi and company have other things in mind. Condi has been quoted as saying that "security assurances are not on the table".
