The costs of net-based-radio

Topic started on 20-5-2006 @ 12:31 AM by elf23

I heard the radio show this forum represents the other night and really got into the first 8 minutes until a pile of bad adverts bombarded my ears.

Then when the guy who came on to discuss the Philadelphia project came on he lasted 5 mins and half way thru speaking got cut off for another 3 ads and some Dave Lee travis circa 1980 jingles.

I decided to start anal-ysing the show output and got the ratio of the following:

PER HOUR OUTPUT
===========

23% guest interviewer
19% presenter talking about his forthcoming book [yep another one on that area]
57% bad adverts

What I want to know is how on earth net radio creates such huge costs? It's just a mike and an ADSL connection. Loads of radio stations these days manage without resorting to adverts all the time. [And it's broadcast from the UK - it was worse than some of the deep south US stations for adverts!!??]

Regards,

Reike Rascal

Hey if you don't like the show you don't HAVE to listen!

The fact that the show already has an audience of over 500,000 and is syndicated worldwide, means most people tolerate the adverts, as any sensible person KNOWS that ads are what pays for the running of a professional radio station!

Smaller "bedroom DJ" Internet stations do not have the running costs of larger stations and probably don't need the advertising income!

As for "badly made adverts" I have passed you comments onto the advertising production company who make adverts for many UK radio stations!

Like I say - if you don't like the show - don't listen!

The keyword you are missing is bandwidth. It's not included in your equation "just mike+ADSL connection" (let alone equipment and the running costs of a decent studio). It's not like AM/FM station when unlimited number of listeners can hear the same broadcast, it's few cents per hour per listener all the time. Anyway, one can just record the show (like a TV program on videotape) and then skip all the ads. Cheers,

Which, by the way, brings again the issue of podcasts. Ross, just get all these pending podcasts out of the way, along with all these critics... (No offense to "the critics"!)
