As of April this year, the Special Forces Support Group (SFSG) became operational at RAF St Athan, near Cardiff.

The creation of this new force, brings together those who were selected from the RAF's II Sqn RAF Regiment (para), the Royal Marines Commando (para) and members of the Parachute Brigades.

The SFSG 's main task is to give direct support the UK's SF anywhere around the world, with additional counter-terrorist duties.

SFSG comes under direct command of Director Special Forces and has become a full time member of the UK SF Group, although individual members will retain their original cap badges but will also wear SF insignia.

The then Defence Secretary Dr John Reid said, QUOTE: All those selected have passed either the Royal Marines Commando course, the Airborne Forces Selection ('P' Company) Course or the RAF Pre-Parachute Selection Course.

Troops are equipped and provided with additional training to fit their specific specialist role on joining the SFSG.

The main role of the SFSG is to provide direct support to UK Special forces intervention operations around the world. They will be prepared to operate in war fighting, counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations at short notice. END QUOTE. Source - in house 'journal' available to civilians.

Anybody care to comment?

A brief outline of Dr Reids comments, in plain text, may be found in Soldier Magazine, May 2006.

Actually - NO!
Please be kind enough never to put words in my mouth. I paraphrased what I had seen in official documents and an 'in-house' magazine.

The article in 'Soldier' Magazine, is a much watered down version and does contain three errors.

I will leave that up to you to discover them.

if you are goint to rant and rave , please have the decency to accuse me of something i actually did .

i NEVER put words into your mouth , please read what i wrote again , with more care this time

hint - " i presume " is the key snippet -- yup -- i made an assumption , based on prior experience that the MOD website and soldier mag are often almost indistiguishable in content

if you want to berate me for that -- fine . Mea culpa , its a generalisation -- but mostly true --

finally as this is an international online forum , alluding to the official documents that you have almost UNIQUE acces to [ out of the ATS membership ] and print articiles in a MOD in house mag [ yes i know civilians can subscibe to it , but how many ACUTALLY do , and how many libraries actually carry it ??? -- just because you have a subs , and probally have free coppies avauilable in your mess too , dont expect every one else to have acess to a special interest publication with very low circulation [ outside UK armed forces ]

dont hold your breath
, now you have stated that the soldier aerticle contains LESS info than the MOD website i cited , AND contains errors ??? -- why should i or any one else make any attempt to locate a copy ??

if we are to discuss this issue on ATS -- it would be best to use the facts on the ATS web site - as EVERYONE here can read it with a click of the mouse

unless you want to put forward a more imformative online resource ??

are we going to discuss the actual unit rationally , or play silly buggers ??

So sorry I upset you my friend, but that was not the intention.

I have read and re-read your piece and belatedly do agree with you.

Having said that however, you cannot 'slag me off' for imparting 'special' information which, I might add, I only have access to through my job and some really understanding PSIs.

To name the publications would be a sin but they are published by the Defence Intelligence and Security Services (DISS) and one is a bi-monthly 'in-house' intelligence magazine the other is a monthly intelligence estimate.
