The highest level communication between Iran and the United States in nearly 30 years. Iranian President Ahmadinejad has written a letter to President Bush to be delivered via the Swiss.



At first blush I thought, is this an Iranian 'step back from the brink'? Then I read further and noticed that the contents of the letter have not been made public. The very last line in the article made me think. The BBC knows about a letter, the Swiss have confirmed the existence of a letter, yet the White House states it is "unaware" of a letter. A bit of aloofness?

Well, the letter has been received by the White House and this is the initial response reported by the BBC.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice dismissed hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough, telling the Associated Press: "This letter is not it."

and as reported on CNN

"There are a number of concerns that the international community has with the regime, and the letter doesn't appear to do anything to address those concerns," White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters as President Bush headed to a fund-raising appearance in South Florida.

Interestingly, the article on CNN says the Iranian president "decided to send letters to leaders of certain countries on the occasion of the "Year of Great Prophet Mohammad."" He wouldn't send out a form letter would he? "Dear Postal Patron"......

Indeed, he might send out a form letter--he has the reputation of something of a madman. Better would have been an open letter to the entire world.

I would imagine that perhaps the reason that the White House is "unaware" is simply that the letter sent by Mahmoud started: Dear Satan, How Are You? I Am Fine ..., you think?

The letter was send to the embassy in Switzerland and from there to the US.

The president has acknowledge the letter but not information has been given as what is in it.

One of the possible reasons that Iran may opt for a letter is due to the fact that tomorrow the UN were to meet for the possible sanctions.

Now with a possibility of the Iranian leader reaching to the US and not the UN will be seen as a way to bring some alternative to the US stand off against Iran.

This will put the UN in a different situation because they will have to wait as to what US will do with the information in the letter.

So it will be not section of the UN for now.

Pretty smart move by the Iranian president.

Between this and Shimon Perez "Iran can be wiped off the map" statement can there be any doubt of war? Stupid humans on all sides and a bunch of good people too. I don't see any peaceful way out, I am dismayed that perhaps the last opportunity to step back isn't going to be taken.

From the time of the Shah this has been coming. Nukes - it'll be nukes. No matter the rhetoric, all sides are guilty of letting this situation develop to this point. June or July it'll be hot and anything anywhere could set "it" off. It'll really heat up once "the Street" finds something to cause mass demonstrations from the "Stans" to North America. Lots of disgrace, enough to go around here for a half-life.

Just heard that the letter is 13-15 pages long and discusses history, religion, and philosophy and in no way, hardly addresses what the current Iranian nuclear issue.

On a more serious note, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice pretty much indicated that President Mahmoud Ahmanutjob's letter is pretty much saying nothing new and is no diplomatic breakthrough.

The letter wasn't leaked, this is fake. If he would really have written this lettre it would be an awesome joke!!

Hello people!!!! Come on now. What regime has had the best luck basically defing the world and building nuclear weapons? Yep old Crazy Kim. It worked for him, why not try it and see if it works for Iran?????

I think it would be nice for the iranian president to make the letter public, I mean dont we have enough cloak and dagger?


However Id say the following solutions are out of the question:

1. America converts to islam

2. Israel destroyed and its inhabitants shipped back to europe in boxcars(holocaust reference)

I think those letters are a sick joke.....

Reuters apparently has a copy of the letter sent to the Prez. The entire contents have not been revealed in the story however.

He also questioned how the September 11 attacks on the United States could have occurred without the knowledge of America's extensive intelligence and security services.

"Why have the various aspects of the attacks been kept secret? Why are we not told who botched their responsibilities?" he asked.

Holy Smokes!! Is he trying to call out President Bush on the various conspiracy theories surrounding the attacks of 9/11? Or, is this an obvious attempt at misdirection?

There's no point writing a letter a letter to Mr. Bush. He doesn't talk to people he doesn't like and all he'll do is throw any attempt at detente back in your face. The Bush administration has slapped away the hands of previous, less crazy Iranian administrations before, so this shouldn't be a surprise. Just of the admin as a very stubborn, bratty, singleminded 5 year old that throws tantrums when they don't get their way. Well maybe a 50 foot tall 5 year old with chainsaws for hands...

There's nothing you can do or say to change their minds or their plans. They don't believe in diplomacy...they don't believe in holding their nose and sitting down at the table with people they have problems with in order to avoid war. Besides, war serves their purposes better anyway. Perpetual war and perpetual fear...you're the boogieman of the moment. Besides, haven't you ever read Project for the New American Century? Everything's lining up perfectly: A new Pearl Harbor, followed by the invasion of Iraq, then Iran, then Syria and North Korea.

Those leaked letter are fake. Stinks to the heavens of a former press secretary or other propagandist. The CNN letter gave the reply I expected though- convert to Islam or die. How bleedingly predictable...

How hypocritical is that??? An avowed enemy of all Christians by simple membership in the Muslim faith questioning a Christian Presidents actions?

Those in power have specific time in office, and do not rule indefinitely, but their names will
be recorded in history and will be constantly judged in the immediate and distant futures.
The people will scrutinize our presidencies.

Did we manage to bring peace, security and prosperity for the people or insecurity and
unemployment?

Did we intend to establish justice, or just supported especial interest groups, and by forcing
many people to live in poverty and hardship, made a few people rich and powerful – thus
trading the approval of the people and the Almighty with theirs’?

Did we defend the rights of the underprivileged or ignore them?

Did we defend the rights of all people around the world or imposed wars on them, interfered
illegally in their affairs, established hellish prisons and incarcerated some of them?

Did we bring the world peace and security or raised the specter of intimidation and threats?

Did we tell the truth to our nation and others around the world or presented an inverted
version of it?

Were we on the side of people or the occupiers and oppressors?

Did our administration set out to promote rational behaviour, logic, ethics, peace, fulfilling
obligations, justice, service to the people, prosperity, progress and respect for human dignity
or the force of guns.

What the letter will do in favor of Iran is to buy time.

Already the UN will push their section to consider possible sanctions against the Iran for two weeks.

Is all about, policies, politics and foreign affairs.

In other words the Iranian leader knows how to play bureaucracy just like any other leader in the world for his own gain.

Even if the letter was a whole bunch of mumble jumble and BS.
